Mary Landrieu: Why I Should Be Vice-President.

Going to college in Louisiana, I was familiar with the senator, but not like last night. That was just...something else entirely. I was here last year, when a Bush clone named Suzanne Terrell got federal backing and tons of money to unseat Landrieu, and she couldn't do it. In fact, this year Terrell tried running for something else. Lost again. I remember reading back in high school about Landrieu being on Al Gore's list for VP nominees, but I didn't think it was possible. Now with the 2004 election, buzz was gathering, but I again didn't think it was possible. Why? Honestly, because she's a woman. Geraldine Ferraro couldn't do it, plus it would open up a plethora of Mondale Part Deux jokes. I just didn't understand why she of all the female politicians was being considered.

After last night, now I know. Could she do it? Would she do it? That possibility confounds me right now, but at least now I see why she's considered. I believe the hype. Maybe she was actually using her time on the floor AS a "Why I Should Be the VP Nominee" opportunity, I don't know. All I know is, I now BADLY want to see a Landrieu-Cheney debate.

Landrieu is from the south, she's a woman, and as anyone who saw her last night knows, she's great.

The only drawback would be that we might lose her senate seat, because Louisianna leans repub... L has 8 electoral votes IIRC.

But I definitel think she deserves serious consideration.

Clark/Landrieu doesn't sound like a bad ticket to me :) We could easily do worse.

That sounds good. And I think Clark is the only candidate who can pull off a woman VP, too. Having a woman on the ticket can't be spun as weak if you have four stars.

And this would counter any attempt by Bush to swap Condi for Cheney. It presents an even starker contrast to Bush Co. Besides, it's high time we had a female VP.

he's the only candidate who can walk on water, too.

I saw him trying to turn a discussion of Landrieu's possibility as a VP into a chance to bash Clark supporters, and then I saw you grinning and encouraging him. Perhaps I'm mistaken.

I took his statements more as a bash than a joke, which is probably more accurate considering he goes into pro-clark threads to make anti-clark remarks, something I refuse to reciprocate with Dean.

Yes, his attitude is amusing. But he did mean it as a way to bash Clark supporters, I believe.

...just chill. He was pointing out that SOME Clarkies think the man DOES walk on water, just as SOME Deaniacs do. Hell, I'm sure some Kerry supporters think the same thing, judging from the "THAT WAS KOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!11" response from like five people after the Leno appearance. So chiiiiiiiill.

I'm saying that it's harder to spin a woman VP as being weak if the top of the ticket is a general. Do you disagree with this?

My money would be on Richard Ieyoub, the person who nearly beat Blanco in the gubernatorial primary. We NEED Blanco to win, so that we can pull this off. Rep. Chris John will probably run for the Senate in 2004 (if Breaux retires), and he'd be the frontrunner to win. If Ieyoub had incumbency behind him, he'd also be a frontrunner in 2006 when he'd have to run for an election.

I think her time on the floor last night wasn't a calculated "I wanna be a VP" sort of thing. Hatch and his ugly 'anti-women' rhetoric just put her over the edge, as it should have.

What impressed me was that despite being so angry, she kept completely on point and just destroyed Hatch. I think she'd be a great VP candidate - a moderate Southern woman. I don't think Dean could pick her - her IWR and PA votes probably wouldn't be a plus with him, plus he probably needs someone with a little more foreign policy credentials - but if someone else gets the nomination I think she's a very strong VP candidate.

how did she vote on late term abortion ? i know she supports drilling in the arctic refuge which i oppose. but i seriously do believe she is far more liberal than she votes. and that if she came from a more liberal state she would probably vote like barbara boxer. but that being said, i do think she would make a fine candidate for vp. her debating skills and staying on subject are great. i think she would make a good vp for anyone but probably the best with edwards because it kind of reminds me of clinton's strategy of two southerners but rather with one being a woman which would appeal to many. i heard some compare her to being a female version of bill clinton when it comes to charisma and southern background.

We spoke this morning and he told me that response to Mary's speech has been overwhelmingly positive. So positive that she is letting the staff off early today.

I was told after the election in 2002, Mary was majorly pissed at being dragged through the mud by Terrell. That was the impetus for last night. Nevertheless, I would like to see Mary as VP.

It's hard to believe anyone could hear her speak last night and think it was a campaign ploy - unless they wanted to smear her.

She'd also be in line for an Oscar.

...if it came off that way, I didn't mean it. I'm definitely NOT cynical over something as great as Landrieu's stand last night, no way. I'm very much proud of her and wondering what could happen from here.
