Why can't Americans escape to Canada if there's a draft?
When I was a kid, I hated Vietnam draft dodgers because I read about a few of them who became Quebec separatists a few years after fleeing to Canada (petty, I know...But I know better now.), but I'm hearing "no Canada if there's a draft".

Why?

word on the street is that we now have an agreement with Canada that they will return anyone who goes there to avoid the draft.

die for the cause of Halliburton's profits.

27. I thought we had an agreement with Canada to return felons
to the US (I suppose it works both ways). But, I believe Canada will refuse to extridite if the death penalty is involved. And, if what the person is accused of is not a crime in Canada, does it count?

3. It won't be easy this time
I think they will close the borders and stop anyone from trying to escape - nothing like last time - this is a whole new ball game.

5. Right, during Vietnam the Old American Republic was still free
We are a whole lot closer to Totalitarian Rule under the Busheviks.

It is going to be much more dangerous for those people who volunteer for the Underground Railroad.

8. No, it might not be as simple as driving across
but everyone knows the border is fundamentally permeable. Always has been, always will be. There are hiking trails that cross the border, for starters. And there must be a thousand places where you can cross by boat. The question comes down to whether fugitive Americans will be willing or able to go underground in Canada, and for how long.
On another tack, there are lots of other countries around. Scotland and Italy, in particular, need people pretty badly.

11. The border has a wide
treeless strip - man made area that can be seen from the air also - No cover if crossing during daylight. Yes, you can get across in many places, but as you say, it will be hard for the individuals to survive after they get there -

24. A brand spanking new Underground Railroad!
Hey, who in their right mind is going to put up with this draft nonsense. Remember Harriet Tubman got slaves up to Canada on the Underground Railroad, and I bet it's possible again today. Besides, the border patrol is certainly not looking for Americans sneaking over the border...

And if not Canada, how about Mexico?

6. It has to do with the new border agreement between the US and Canada
but I am not at all sure that it will effect those in the draft because the agreement has to do with terrorism not the draft. The question is: How would Canada interpret it and that I don't know.

9. National Repatriation
Amended rules for a general draft would enable the return of anyone leaving the U.S. for Canada.

I believe the Canadian government signed this agreement around 2000 or 2001?

29. i believe that if shrub uses those articles...his cover is blown....
...this will give an open door to anyone investigating his deriliction of duty...the AWOL...a draft will definatly make this a front running issue...even if he is re-selected.....this will make headlines...once people learn where bush really was in 'nam, even hard core freepers will have to start looking at themselves in the mirror for their backing of a traitorous deserter. i have always believed that if the awol story ever made it to the major news outlets, it would be devastating to him. everybody hates a deserter.....

18. Rumors we heard in 1972 weren't true,
at least in my experience. My buddy and I went to Montreal, crossing the border north on I-81 in NY. We had been 'told', that unless we could prove that we weren't draftable, we would not get in. I was 4-F by then, so I had my card ready, and Steve had a lottery number something like 320, so we didn't have to worry.

At the border, a Canadian official asked for my driver's licence only, not Steve's. He asked if we were in Canada fo business or pleasure. I said pleasure, he said 'Bon soir', and that was that; we drove on, grinning. But coming back we had to deal with US customs; rude as hell!!

But my point is, rumors may be just that: rumors.

19. I would never and did not run to canada during the draft.
I had a very low number and enlisted in the United States Army.
Just my good luck i had enough of a hearing loss for uncle sam to say no thanks.

If I had been drafted, i would have refused to be inducted and served jail time. I do not run from fights, but that is a personal belief.

20. Question: would you
wait until you get drafted, and then leave? I'm assuming then that you're an AWOL.

Maybe all young healthy men between the ages of 18 and 26 should start looking around now? Start taking some trips to different places, or look into the possibility of Scotland or Italy. I'm from Sweden, and they are looking for people (it's cold, though).

No life is worth oil and corporate profits. This is not a war about defense. Go.

Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 01:17 AM by Isome
My son will be 17 y/o next year. If they make it clear that conscription is back in vogue, I should be able to take him, since he'd be under 18, with no problem? Right?
