A short discussion earlier today got me wondering if the Democrats really are the minority party in the Senate. I realize that the Senate was never ment to be representation according to population, but at the same time it has to be said that each Senator does indeed represent his own state. So I went to the Census Bureau and got the state by state updated resident population, as of July 1, 2002 (the latest date they had numbers for). I then listed each state and each Senator, divided the state's population by 2, and gave half to each Senator. Then I added up a column for the Republicans and the Democrats. The District of Columbia was not counted, nor was half of South Dakota because Jeffords is an independent. Here is what I came up with as the portions of the population represented by each party:
Total Population: 280,123,726 (100%) Total Democrats: 160,074,465 (57.14%) Total Republicans: 120,049,261 (42.86%)
God Bless Robert Byrd
