'Progressives' might be wise to pay attention: FTAA and SOA protests
how the protesters are treated will be telling. How the media portrays the protests will be important.
I hope most progressives can offer some sort of solidarity to these people, at least in thought or word.

..& Watch out for the negative spin!

1. won't matter G_j
If there's a week-long vigil, the media won't touch any part of the protest. If there's ANY incident, the news hounds will swoop in and make it about the anarchist violence.

We can hope that the countries in attendance will tell the US and WTO organizations where they can stick it.

2. year after year
people (including nuns) are arrested and sent to federal prison for "crossing the line" at the SOA. The major media is usually nowhere to be seen.

However, the FTAA protests will no doubt get attention because of the easy target of young "anarchists" etc. Watch out also for "plants" dressed in black.
I hope some of us can at least help counter the propaganda within our own community.

3. Local Miami media are "embedded" with the jackboots
Downtown Miami is fenced off, businesses shuttered by building owners locking down, citizens need security clearance to enter large areas there, armed Coast Guard boats by the dozens, police helicopters overhead, cops everywhere.

So far.. no action. Just a HUGE waste of our tax dollars.

4. it seems
that when that sort of "security" is brought out, someone is usually getting too close to heart of the beast.

6. What puzzles me
is that most progressives want the SOA shut down. And at the same time, back a candidate that spoke at a SOA graduation and praised the graduates and the school.

7. Progressives Back Clark?
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 02:02 PM by durutti
Since when?

"Democrats" and "progressives" should not be used interchangeably. Most of the former aren't the latter, and most of the latter aren't the former.

here at DU that support clark, claim they are both democrats and progressives.

Just ask them. They'll tell you.

that nary a one of them have posted to this thread.

How would they spin clark praising the School of Americas as being either Democratic or progressive?

16. Anti-FTAA or Anti-NAFTA or Anti-WTO threads are likely
to be ignored altogether by the supporters of a few of the candidates.

Cognitive dissonance, and all that.

27. So, why is Buchanan anti-Bush?
Fill me in, I don't follow him. Has it got something to do with Buchanan being an isolationist? Bit of a Pope worshipping Catholic, libertarian leaning, anti-semitic nut case, isn't he?

29. Buchanan is a classic old - fashioned conservative
Bush has followed more of the Neo-Conservative philosophy.
Since Buchanan is in no way connected to Government he is free to speak out. Old fashioned Conservatives in the House and Senate are following the leader at the moment.

37. HELL no! Goldwater supported Gays in the military
"Look, you don't have to be straight to shoot straight" - B. Goldwater, on relaxing sanctions against Gays in the military.

Goldwater was probably the most "right thinking" of the old conservative types. His ilk has all but been drowned out by the scourge of America, the NeoCons.

26. of course the SOA protests have taken
place under both Dem and Repug presidents. A friend of mine was arrested there during Clinton's last term and spent 6 months in prison.
The 'Close the SOA' movement has been traditionaly organized by Catholic activists. Others have joined them. I'm guessing "progressive" works here, at least in my mind.

There are certain issues that "progressives" seem to have to keep the pressure on regardless of which party is 'in power'. FTAA/WTO/World Bank/IMF policies are another, but there are many such "issues".

12. it should be interesting to watch
how citizens in the UK are treated (by the media, police, etc.) in comparison to US citizens in Miami.
I will venture to say it will be different. No doubt there will be many "lawless trouble-makers" in FL.

36. The hell you say!
Defending SOA?!

This is IT. I have HAD IT.

Reading about all the perks like $8.5 million for Miami to deal with the protests tucked away in the funding bill our Senators so wimpishly refused to vote against, or even to go on record as voting FOR.

This is the end of our democracy, and it is BIPARTISAN.
