Chance: Hostility toward U.S. in Mosul

MOSUL, Iraq (CNN) -- Two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters crashed Saturday in Iraq, killing at least 17 U.S. soldiers. The choppers went down in a residential neighborhood in the northern city of Mosul.

CNN correspondent Matthew Chance was in Mosul on Sunday, where he spoke with anchor Renay San Miguel about the local attitude toward U.S. forces, and the ongoing investigation of the crash.

CHANCE: There have been so many attacks against coalition and U.S. forces in recent days and recent weeks, but this one carried the heaviest cost in terms of the lives of U.S. troops.

You join me here in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul in a position overlooking the crash site where those two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters came down last night. The exact circumstances of their downing remain unclear. But investigators are focusing on the possibility that hostile fire was involved.

This is pretty early in the day to reach cynical overload, but I can feel it happening.

U.S. Eyes Plan to End Occupation in Iraq

WASHINGTON (AP) - In the face of continuing violence and a mounting death toll of American troops, the Bush administration says the United States won't spend years as an occupier in Iraq and plans to quickly cede power to a new government.

As the number of Americans killed in Iraq passed the 400 mark on Saturday, the Iraqi Governing Council endorsed a White House proposal to form a provisional government by June. The transfer of power would provide President Bush a strategy to pull out U.S. troops as guerrilla warfare escalates.

Word of the new plan came on a day that two Black Hawk helicopters collided and crashed, possibly the result of enemy groundfire. The military says 17 American soldiers died, making the incident the worst single loss of life since Bush ordered the U.S.-led invasion to overthrow Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

``We did the Iraqi people a great favor by removing him, and so I wouldn't be surprised that any kind of violence is promoted by him, but I don't know,'' Bush said in an interview with David Frost for PBS-BBC's ``Breakfast with David Frost.''

Bush said the United States will not spend ``years and years'' in Iraq as a new government takes shape.

I've made my sentiment of the asshole-in-chief* elsewhere quite clear. The US needs to stay n Iraq and clean up the bloody filthy mess it made and be fucking responsible of its own actions for once.

4. Well, our political counterparts will use this one!
They'll point to it as evidence of the need to level the entire country, and in the next breath congratulate themselves for being committed to liberating the Iraqis.

It'll make perfect sense to them.
