Next time some older Armchair Warmonger says hes too old to enlist
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 01:02 PM by Mari333
Show him THIS...56 yr old grandma in the Reserves called to active duty....IN IRAQ
LINCOLN, Neb. -- At a time when most people are looking forward to retirement, Connie Greenwood is preparing for combat. The 56-year-old Greenwood looks less a soldier and more like somebody's grandmother. And she is.

But she also holds the rank of First Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves as member of the 308th Transportation Company in Lincoln. Greenwood has been called to active duty for the first time in her 26 years as a reservist.

Greenwood said the timing of her first deployment could not be better. She said she would rather be called to active duty now than right before her retirement in four years.

2. Yes Im saving that site
Those chickenhawks who whine they are too old to enlist and sit on their PC's yelling about how wonderful Georgie Porgies war is, and yell and holler about how wonderful it is to watch our kids die for Terra, all the while sitting and ordering pizzas as they make ass grooves in their Lazy Boy chairs...well no more...get your middle aged warmongering arses on the front lines you seedy SOB's or shut the F*** up.

4. If you want to join the reserves and have 2-4 years of previous service
...the age limit is 44.
You've got to be able to finish up your 20 years by the age of 65. The military usually starts trying to get you to retire at the age of 60 unless you're absolutly critical or a three-star REMF trying to get his or her fourth.

If you've never served before, the maximum age is 37 for the reserves and officers, and 35 for enlisted active duty - or it was back in the 1990's.

I suspect as troop requirements increase, the max age limit might rise to around 45 or 50 so long as one is able-bodied.

5. I looked all over for a "satire" warning
I don't know why.

At least she has lived a good number of years. It's sad but no sadder than risking younger lives.

6. There was 50 year old soldier on the ground in Iraq
This was indicated in an article a month ago or so. I think he was being interviewed about the Burger King being built in Iraq.

I'm goddamn glad I cut the chord as soon as my active duty was up. If they come after me I'm going to jail or seeking asylum in another country.

7. "Older"?? Hell I've heard this from young armchair warmongers!
When on IRC a year ago, I was lighting into a 20-something rabid rightwinger over the (then upcoming) Iraq war. As you can imagine, at one point in the back-and-forth I asked him when he was signing up to go fight in Iraq. Here was his true to life answer, no editing....

"I don't have to. My dad went to 'Nam so our obligation has been fulfilled."

Unbelievable.

8. This is just unreal.

I don't know what is more disturbing-- the fact that Grandma is being sent off to kill Arabs for oil, or that she is so gung-ho about it.

9. She'll be one of many around that age and older called up
The post I live on as seen it's share of 50 year olds and older going off to Iraq. The oldest so far was 63, and had just retired from his civilian job when he was called.

10. Good god! My dad is retired military, 69, and after 9/11 he called up and
told whoever it is you tell, that he was available for active duty if they wanted him or could use him.

I just sorta shrugged it off. Never dreamed they might actually call him back.

He just turned 69. Hopefully off the charts.
