Is Monroe County, NY (Rochester area) progressive?
Somebody here said it is, but Tom Golisano won the most votes in the 2002 NY gubernatorial election in Monroe. I know that the guy is from Rochester, but for him to win more votes than either Pataki or McCall, there has to be some fairly strong libertarian undercurrents there...

1. It's mixed.
The city area plus the small town of Brighton (as small heavily Jewish suburb) are heavily Democratic, the suburbs are heavily Republican. The county legislature is republican-controled, and most of the county-wide offices are held by Republicans. However, IIRC, the county tends somewhat Democratic on national and state-wide elections. Hard to tell about the current house delegation, since the redistricting shuffled everything -- i.e. I am represented by a Republican who lives all the way near Pennsylvania, and not the Democrat who lives like 5 minute drive away.

As for Golisano? Well, he is not only a "hometown boy" but is also running Paychex, which is pretty much the most successful business based in Rochester these days; and Golisano has heavy community involvement -- he made donations to the local children's hostpitals, the Rochester Institute of Technology, etc...

3. To constrast.
Thanks for the data, first of all, confirms my recolection.
Here is the result of the most recent county executive race, for constrast -- the point being that it's probably more of a 'swing' county than anything.

2003 County Executive Election:
(R,C,I) Maggie Brooks 141795, 64.6%
(D,WFP) William Johnson 77865, 35.4%
