1. no worries
just appeal to their racist tendencies and I'm sure they'll vote Dem (hmmm...how does a liberal appeal to a racist? hmmmmmmm)

2. Your remarks are offensive
People in the south vote both parties (if you look at the governors, senators, etc). Even us white ones who you say are racist due to our geographical place of birth.

4. Still offensive
Because we've been over this, that was not what Dean was doing.

6. Right. IMO, using the Confederate flag was still a mistake, though
I wouldn't say Dean meant ot pander to racist tendencies, but he used the wrong symbol to identify Southerners--he would have been better off to use one that was less divisive. Dean's goal was to get more votes, and I agree with his campaign that the South could be competitive for Democrats in 2004, with the right candidate and the right campaign.

Dean supporters will probably come along any time now and rip his lungs out. :)

8. Where is Jiacinto when we really need him?
Ask Carlos, he knows all this stuff. Or, he can find it ASAP. The kid's a genius with election statistics.

13. I am travelling across the country
But I will say that it probably varies from race to race. That's the best answer I can give.

The general rule of thumb that I know of is that Democrats need anywhere from 30-40% of the white vote to win statewide races in the South.

11. To get back on topic, we know from LA and 1996 that they are competitive
With the right candidate, and some actual *campaigning* in the South, I think we could do a great deal of good raising awareness about the issues, and get ourselves some votes in the bargain.

Here are some charts from the http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?PageID=751">Pew Research Center:

15. Used to be a majority, for decades
Just look at election results from the '20s-'50s. 'Dixiecrat' isn't a cliche for nothing. Democrat numbers started dropping during the peak of the Civil Rights movement, over the very issue Dean gaffed on. Now it is VERY mixed / marginal in most Southern states.
