We on this board always have a debate about "purity vs. electability." Should we be pragmatic and compromise some of our principals to be elected? Should we demand a perfect candidate, and not worry about electability? Should we meet somewhere in the middle of those? Well, on one issue, we don't have to make that choice: Universal Health Care.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll in mid-October shows that, when given the choice of universal health care and holding down taxes, universal coverage wins be an astonishing 80% to 17%! (My link is at the bottom.) So universal health care is not only good policy, but a winning issue.
I think all of our candidates should stand for some form of universal health care, whether it's a national, single-payer system or some subsidized form of our current insurance system.
