What is patriotism?
Yes we know it is love of one's land and its people.

But give specific examples.

Is it waving a flag?
Is it helping less fortunate Americans?
Is it hiring American citizens before immigrants?
Is it supporting the leader whether you agree with him or not?
Is it questioning everything the government does?
Is it informed voting?
Is it loving the land and its people while doing nothing to show for it?
Is it eating a hot dog while watching baseball?

You may also define it by saying what is not patriotism, like loving the government and not questioning it is Nationalism.

Lets hear it from you:

patriotism is doing whats best for the country, and taking any means necessary to do so. not blindly following its leaders, like some would have you believe. ive been called communist, unamerican, and even a terrorist all because i didnt support the iraqi quagmire.

just because i spoke out against a war time president doesnt make me any of those things. it is our duty to question everything we see wrong with the government, if we arent, then we are neglecting our patriotic duty to better the country.

2. To me patriotism is:

1. Questioning the motives of the government (no matter what party)
2. Being an informed voter. Never buy into the rhetoric that your vote is wasted if you aren't voting for the most popular candidate.
3. Serving your country. Whether it is in the military like myself, or the Peace Corps, your local church, or food bank, etc.
4. Educating yourself on the background of the constitution. Only voting for candidates that understand the ideals of the document.

What is rhetoric

1. Flag waving. Looks good, does nothing (no Veteran died protecting the flag - unless they were purely stupid)

3. As Samuel Johnson said so well,
"Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels".
