9/11 Truth Is the Achilles Heel of the Bush Regime and Its Perpetual War

Was it "the Pearl Harbor of the 21st century" or the American Reichstag Fire? Though we still don't know what really happened, the massacre of Sept. 11, 2001 became casus belli for an endless global war.

At home, the Bush regime, illegitimate and unelected, seized on the attacks as the enabling event for a new system of total power and total surveillance.

Yet for fourteen months, the regime has constantly blocked public investigation into 9/11 and its background. As though to stress their intent never to reveal the truth about 9/11, they appointed America's best-known liar, Henry Kissinger, himself a master of terrorism, to lead the so-called independent investigation.

Why Kissinger? Was the Bush regime unaware of his obvious conflicts of interest, as a consultant to UNOCAL who once helped cut an oil-pipeline deal with the former friends of the U.S. government, the Taliban? Did they not realize that naming the likes of him would ignite the storm of protest that caused him to withdraw from the nomination? Did they not trust anyone less compromised, or less conspicuous, to do the work of whitewashing?

Is the official story really that flimsy?

The Kissinger appointment was tantamount to a confession that it is, indeed, that flimsy.

We may not know exactly what happened on Sept. 11, but we knew, long before the brief-lived Kissinger appointment, that the official story is a farce. Seekers of the "9/11 Truth" have established at least that much in their volumes of research. The kindest explanation for the oddities and numerous disturbing coincidences of Sept. 11 is that the regime is criminally negligent, an active danger to its own citizens.

How dare they plead incompetence for 9/11 and then embark on an insanely aggressive war policy against countries that had nothing to do with it? The Bush regime's "War on Terra" almost seems designed to provoke half the world into attacking America.

Given the weakness of the official story -the official conspiracy theory of the 9/11 attacks- we take no particular risk in at least asking whether elements within the government had sufficient prior knowledge of what was coming to prevent it, and whether they knowingly allowed the Qaeda attacks to happen on purpose. After all, the Sept. 11 massacre has allowed the regime to save itself from the laughter of the American and international majority; to shred the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; and to implement longstanding plans for "homeland security" and serial wars against endless enemies. Developments since 9/11 do not merely suggest a regime concerned about getting a pipeline through Afghanistan, but one looking to take the whole planetary pie: mobilizing the U.S. population to fight an endless crusade, in a time of economic meltdown.

Not a week passes without dire warnings that new attacks are guaranteed to come soon. Cheney and his ilk, the same people who have blocked a real investigation into 9/11, have repeatedly guaranteed that even more horrible terror hits can come anywhere, at any time, in any form, in America, Europe or Asia. With the whole planet at stake, can we afford anything less than full disclosure of the 9/11 Truth? From the lengths that the regime has so far taken to enshroud everything about that day in secrecy, we can certainly see that they cannot afford to have the truth see light of day.

Be patriotic. Remember the victims of that day and honor them by demanding the truth! 9/11 Truth is the key to the doors of perception for the majority of the American public. Its disclosure can stop the war, reverse the police state, bring down the regime, initiate a public learning process about our own history, and set us sailing for a different world.

What should you believe? Don't let me decide for you, and don't let CNN or the pundits decide. Don't let anyone tell you that information on a website is automatically less valid than what you see on NBC, or what you read in the New York Times. Trust only what you can verify. Do your own research. Trace all stories back to their original sources. Learn the basics of fact-checking. Study the history of lies, that you may be armed against new ones. Internet lets you read the local and international press, and gives access to much of the world's scholarship. It also spreads dangerous myths and rumors, but this is also true of word-of-mouth among cave people 50,000 years ago. Caveat lector! (Latin: "Reader beware.")

Demand Investigation

And then, what happens when you still don't know what really happened on Sept. 11? So much of the real story has been classified, and so much of the evidence has been suppressed, that of course you cannot possibly know. And this is the point when you need to ask: Why don't you know? How does "homeland security" justify keeping any secrets about what already happened on Sept. 11, 2001? The terrorists know exactly what they did, so the secrets are actually being kept from you: the American and international public. What is the reason for keeping the details of 9/11 suppressed? What do members of the U.S. government want to hide? Starting with Dick Cheney, the most stubborn and consistent opponent of an independent 9/11 commission?

Clearly, those who would know the truth must organize to demand it, and search for it themselves. That is the only avenue open to us.

If you have caught the government lying enough times, when do you stop assuming that they ever tell the truth? When is it enough for people to begin conducting their own investigation?

Conspiracy and Analysis

Aha, that tired all-purpose argumentative bludgeon, "conspiracy theory." The official story of 9/11 is a conspiracy theory. It posits a conspiracy of Islamist terrorists who caught their adversaries entirely by surprise. Agents of the government and many in the media routinely posit a terrorist conspiracy that links Qaeda to Iraq, or Iran, or both, or even North Korea, though the evidence is lacking. Why aren't they dismissed as "conspiracy theorists"?

For many years, Americans were told they faced the specter of an organized Communist plan to overthrow the Free World. When the Pope was shot, we heard that this was a hit ordered by the KGB through Bulgarian proxies, who hired the Turkish assassin. Why wasn't that attacked as "conspiracy theory"? Because the "conspiracy" part of theory doesn't matter as such, only whether it is true or false.

An institution that works in secrecy is by definition conspiratorial. Two people planning to conceal their actions from a third can qualify as a conspiracy under the law. Law books are full of conspiracy statutes, and these allow for consideration of circumstantial evidence. Conspiracies are not everywhere, but it is natural and sensible to look for signs of secret machinations in mysterious political events.

In practice, those who attack with the "conspiracy theory" label generally do so to discredit lines of investigation that suggest their own government's involvement in crimes. Yet history has seen many cases of such criminal involvement, not just by the U.S. government, but by most governments. There is nothing unusual about conspiracies (secret dealings) per se. They are the stuff of normal power politics.

The conspiracy theory label is easily wielded by those who are too lazy to think for themselves, or who do not want to learn the actual details of history and politics.

How do we evaluate what happens behind the official scenes? When was the last time you were allowed to read the minutes of a corporate boardroom meeting, or of a cabinet? We move in a world of appearances and deceptions. How do we explore connections among power brokers and power elites? Should we not investigate deep politics, meaning the decision-making processes that are hidden from democratic control? Should we not investigate parapolitics, meaning decisions made in secret by self-appointed, informal groups such as mafias, secret societies, and covert networks within the "clandestine services"? If we are interested in the politics and history of our times, then we need to study hidden connections in a way that is often attacked as conspiracy theory.

Many of the "anti-conspiratorialists" suffer from obvious institutional or ideological blindspots. They tend to be apologists for the system. Among the most stubborn are a brand of left-liberal intellectuals who want to dismiss the existence of parapolitics because it conflicts with their commitment to a neatly-defined social theory. Certain kinds of leftists hate thinking that there is anything they don't already know, or that is not accounted for in their prefabricated models.

Genuine inquiry does not entrap itself in spurious abstractions like "conspiracy theory" versus "institutional theory." To prefer either option as a methodology sets up a rigid paradigm and determines conclusions in advance. If we choose one or the other, we will always see either "conspiracies" or "institutions" as the driving force of all social phenomena.

In genuine practice, the study of elites ("conspiracy") and the study of structures ("institution") tend to yield microscopic and macroscopic views of the same phenomena. In other words, "conspiracy" is micro and "institution" is macro, though the terms are both of limited descriptive value, since both suggest something essential and timeless. Time was when social analysts preferred vigorous and truly descriptive terms, terms like power, elite, class, capital, interest, structure, networks, groups, dynamics, peoples, the state. These are the phrases that can describe actors making decisions according to mindset, perception, and resources, within constantly evolving situations and constraints.

Real scholarship begins with *empirical* observation and derives hypotheses by using logic. Then we can analyze, debate, and rule out or support our hypotheses. Finally, genuine reflection hunts for the paradigms that predetermine our thinking, in an effort to overcome them, to go beyond them, and not to enshrine or condemn them.

What is the most powerful such hidden paradigm at the moment in the United States, the one that blocks the American public from understanding their world? In my view, it is the idea that all the great crimes committed over the years by agents and allies of the U.S. government, openly and in secret, came simply as the product of incompetence, or of well-meaning mistakes with the best interest of Americans in mind. The truth behind Sept. 11th, when it becomes known in full, is sure to topple that illusion.
