Poll question: Who would you choose as Senate Democratic Leader?
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 09:23 PM by ih8thegop
This is in response to a thread about replacing Daschle as Democratic leader.

Say Daschle does not run for re-election for Democratic Leader next year.

Boxer is good. She is one of the 12 that voted against IWR and the 87 billion. I will be doing all that I can so that she holds onto her seat in 2004.

16. Senator Byrd. I know that he is older than dirt, but by God he
knows his constitution, the laws of the Senate and is a feisty and intelligent old cuss.

He towered above the entire senate before the war and was mesmorizing to watch on Cspan. He was a joy to me, rekindled my passions against the Bush fuckers, and inspired me with his eloquence.

19. He used to be Majority Leader
However, he quit to become Appropriations Chairman...he prefers that work better. So he probably wouldn't want the job, even though he'd be (and was) good at it.

30. And- Social issues destroying our party
If we keep making decisions on our leaders based on all the social issues that are so popular in the Northeast and the CA Bay Area we'll lose national elections and important seats in the Senate and tons of governorships. And that map will look bluer than blue on election night 2004. That would be a DAMN shame. Some of us want Democrats to advance a progressive economic agenda while stepping back from these single-issue social issues that divide our own party and alienate us from millions.

18. I fell in love with Tom Harkin at the Wellstone Memorial, so
I voted for him. I don't think Hill needs to do that; she is pretty busy being a fundraiser as well as Senator. She lacks some in experience for this job, also, I think. Maybe not. Otherwise, I probably would have voted for her.

20. Should we replace Daschle
The first three in your poll are too new (all three are first termers with a long future in the Senate, but they need time to gain seniority) The Leader should at least be a two-term senator. Feinstein might very well retire in 2006. Jim Jeffords is an Independent. Though he caucuses with us, he should declare that he is a Democrat before he is our leader. Harkin, Feingold, Reid, and Durbin would all be good. I voted for Durbin, though I think it would be better if he were Leader in about 2008 or 2010, when he's gained more clout and another term.

25. Reid will be leader
That is quite clear. He is the heir apparent to Daschle. What is hilarious is how nobody is voting for him. Last week, when he gave his filibuster for about 9 hours, everybody was in love with him. Then, one week later everyone just forgets about it. I personally think Daschle has been a fairly good leader. I don't really like him that much but he has kept the caucus together and is quite popular among democratic senators.

I don't want to have an extremely liberal senator that won't be able to work with moderates like Breaux or Bayh. We need someone that can build a consensus within the caucus.

33. From the List Provided, I'd Choose Tom Harkin.
Being Californian, I really would be biased for Senator Boxer, but I think that Senator Harkin, all things considered, would make an extraordinary leader for the Democrats in the Senate.

Almost any Democrat (there are a few exceptions) in the Senate would be an improvement over Tom Daschle.

34. Why would anyone want Dick Durbin?
I've watched him on C-Span time and time again, but he's boring as hell. Almost as bad as Daschle.

I'd much rather have someone like Schumer or Harkin as our leader.
