Maytag to Ship 1,700 Illinois Jobs to Mexico !

Soon the maytag plant in Galesburg Illinois will be gone. They are closing the plant
and sending 1,700 - $15 an hour jobs to Mexico where they will make 58 cents an
hour.

This will destroy the 35,000 population town of Galesburg.

-----

Maytag closes plant, moving 1,600 jobs to Mexico to cut costs - reports 48% profit rise
3 days later.

First, Maytag Corp. moved two parts plants to Mexico; now, a
refrigerator plant is headed there.

The relocations to Reynosa, Mexico, all announced in the last two years, have intensified fears
that Maytag might export even more jobs to countries with cheap labor.

Since January, Maytag has cut 510 salaried jobs in addition to laying off hundreds of
workers at its Hoover plant in Ohio.

Another 380 reductions are planned this fall in Galesburg, Ill., home to the refrigerator plant that
is being relocated to Mexico. The remaining 1,320 workers at that plant are expected to lose
their jobs by the end of 2004.

Yes this town will undoubtedly be drastically affected more than if a tornado ripped through
their town. Tornado recovery can take place in a year - Galesburg grew up around Maytag and
the people depended on Maytag as a major employer.

Three Days later Galesburg and the Maytag employees was dealt a slap in the face - Maytag
announced a 48% increase of its profits even though Maytag cited decreased profits as its need
to move to Mexico.

Mexico has become a popular destination for manufacturers. About 204 companies,
including Black & Decker and Whirlpool, one of Maytag's biggest rivals, employ 70,000 workers in
the Reynosa area.

There are about 10 industrial parks in Reynosa filled with "maquiladoras" companies from
outside Mexico that take advantage of special government programs offering cheap taxes, little
regulation and low-cost labor.

Oh well, you can always flip burgers at McDonalds for $5 an hour. The republicans count it
as a job, let's see them live on $5 an hour.

1. That's one hell of a commute for the Maytag repairman, no?
Check out www.staber.com

They make energy-efficient, commercial-quality washers right here in Columbus, OH. I'm not even particularly "Buy American", but I'm planning to get my next washing machine from them.

6. Don't feel bad
my town is 35,000 in Indiana right next to ya. My husband will lose his job due to plant closing in December probably. It's an antivibration systems factory. They sold the machinery to places like Korea, Africa, and Kentucky. $12-18/hr jobs gone. Had 100% BCBS benefits. Town lost 1500 jobs this plant alone. Other plant closings around here, too.

7. Biggest issue in America today
is the sending of jobs overseas in my opinion.

I wish there were clear answers to how to stop it. I really haven't heard any ideas that I thought would work.

Economics will eventually solve the problem. As overseas standard of livings come up and ours go down, they will meet in the middle and there won't be an advantage to go overseas anymore. I'd really rather avoid that meeting though.

18. Why shouldn't
standards of living increase overseas?

That's ridiculous and shows the true American attitude of entitlement. That's definetely a holdover of the imperialist notions of US and Western powers over the centuries.

It's also ridiculous to believe, that we can always maintain the highest standards of living, while other nations won't aspire to having a better life.

The key is to improve standards of living EVERYWHERE. For this I see no alternative to free trade. We can't give hand outs and development aid only goes so far.

I understand that many Americans are upset that their jobs are leaving overseas, but that can be blamed on the short term profit outlook of corporate America, not those wishing to have a better life for themself.

in many parts of the world are already dying of starvation and lack of medical care.

When people in those nations don't have enough to eat, they wil take any job, even if it pays very little by our standards.

Obviously, there still must be provisions to make sure they are not explited.

I don't see anything here to poverty that exists in other parts of the world. Not even in a hundred years. The reason is, is because Americans are innovative people and with enough investment in certain areas, new jobs will be created that will maintain our high standards of living.

Either we can do that, or impose tarrifs, and other protectionist policies that will in turn raise the price of many goods people buy. Not only that, but it will close markets in other nations, which hurt many small businesses as well as larger ones. Either way, the American standard of living will be lowered to some extent. We may not be able to eat out as much, or buy that shiny brand new SUV.

Still, We don't have as long as a century to change the living standards in many parts of the world. Sure, it will take that long in many of them but it's still a commitment the west should make.

The only way I see raising standards in many parts of the world, is through globalization and free trade. Foreign developement aid by itself doesn't work.

I agree that there's little to appreciate about large corporations. When they take jobs to other nations, they aren't doing it out of some sense of charity. On the contrary. They're looking for cheap labor. To avoid this, the US could impose stiffer penalties for those corporations that mistreat their workers abroad or harm the environment.

As I said in another post though, the major problem is that these companies are worried about their quarterly profits, not their long term plans. I think in the long run, these corporations will be hurt when they realize that when fewer higher paying jobs are here, their employees will have less disposable income, therefore losing a significant consumer base.

30. Most Democratic "leaders" SUPPORT laying off Americans and exporting jobs
Among powerful Democratic leaders, this sort of corporate behavior is praised as "growing the economy" "creating jobs" and "efficiency".

The Democrats aren't fighting for American jobs nearly as hard as they are fighting for gay marriage and to get "under God" taken out of the pledge of allegience. That's why we're the minority party.

12. Hi, new member here.
I left the Democratic Party when Clinton jumped in bed with
Newt, Dole, and the other corporate whores on NAFTA. I simply
could not believe it, and now look at what we have to show for it.
Out of control Capitalism is now running amuck, and we are as
much to blame as the Nazis in the White House. We should have drawn
a line in the sand in 1993. Clinton had the talent to pull it off,
but instead he opted for the money.

Sorry if I offended anyone. Been reading this forum for a few years
and thought it was finally time to join in. I am a Vietnam era vet
who first voted in the 60s. I live in the South, but I am not one
of those Confederate Flag waving idiots you guys like to joke about.

Don't forget us old Vets, and pray we get the young ones home soon
from the Oil War in Iraq.

17. Like your username
Bush did go AWOL. I live less than 70 miles from his so called last
"duty station" in Montgomery, Alabama. Bush is one of a long list
of draft dodging neocons who are now running our country. The Kristols,
Perles, Roves, Cheneys, and Wolfies are brave Americans -:(

Did anyone hear Michael Savage tonight? I heard about 10 minutes driving
back from the mall on some AM station. That SOB basically said anyone
who opposes Bush is a "Boleweevle Communist" - whatever that is. Hell, I live in the South and have never heard that before.

I just finished reading "Blinded By The Right". What a book! I'm not gay and don't really agree with that lifestyle, but you have to hand it to
that kid Brock.

Later folks......

20. Heya, Elwood...
Welcome to DU!

Just thought I'd take a moment to tell you that being gay is not a "lifestyle", it is a matter of sexual orientation. A person can no more choose to be gay than they can choose to be heterosexual. To say that you can't "agree" with someone being gay is like saying you can't agree with someone being straight. If I said I don't agree with your heterosexual lifestyle, do you think you could simply become gay tomorrow? Of course not.

Having said that, I did enjoy your other comments. I have never heard of the term "bollweevil communist" either. Must be Savage straining to be clever again. I wonder where he's from, BTW?

22. Agree was the wrong word
I should have said "don't understand". What could be better than sex with beautiful lady? If everyone had turned gay 100 years ago, we wouldn't be here discussing this would be. Sorry, had to get that dig in. Freeing our country from the Bushites is more important. Otherwise, it makes no difference what you are, you are doomed.

Goodnight

15. Welcome aboard Elwood!
I wouldn't be too hard on Clinton...he was rather sucessful with his economic plan. We've lost 3MM jobs and gone from $500BB surplus to a $500BB deficit in 4 years under Bush.

No, the problem is lack of vision on the part of the Republicans and this not-so-bright misleader. I saw Clinton speak last November. He laid out a vision that focused on developing a completely different economy that de-emphasized oil as our primary energy source. Tax credits for renewable/alternative energies and repairing/redesigning our infrastructure to address the change in energy policy would drive job creation here. Bush has no vision except fighting "terror" ... whatever the hell that is.

Republicans are not dealing with the real issue....oil is almost past the point where demand is outstripping capacity and in 50 years oil will be gone...so we best start looking at this as a national security issue. Unfortunately, big oil owns the executive branch and they will ride the profit curve at our expense.

considering he only had 4 fingers.

He'd be getting quite a chuckle over Limbaugh's problems.....he'd be playing "The Harder They Come, The Harder They Fall" with extra relish, I think.
