U.S. Military Juggles Everything in Iraq

"We are going tough, but we are fair," Swannack said. "If a whole town is supporting insurgents, I'll put tanks there and cut off its electricity."

1. I don't know the names of neighbors a block away...
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 11:34 AM by mmm
how could they possibly blame me for what they
think someone who lives three or four blocks from me might have done.

One thing is for sure tho: having been wrongly punished one day I would surely be hunting US soldiers the next.

3. I don't have a problem.
If every single person in a town is supporting insurgents, then why should we help them.

However, I am quite shocked to learn that whole towns are supporting insurgents since the Iraqis love us so much.

4. I have a secret for you. Iraqi children need electricity too
Now tell me why they should be punished for what adults do.

Don

5. I read this and felt a sense of shock...but ...I don't have an answer..
The troops are taught how to use to use killing machines.
When they are being picked off, panic sets in..I am sure they are grasping at straws on how to control something that will not stop.

All the while the commander & thief...is kissing some royal ass.

6. I do have a problem with it
as Matcom points out, it would also punish children, who are the truly innocent ones in this whole mess. I also have a hard time accepting the "insurgents" and "terrorists" labels on people who view us as an unfriendly army of occupation.

I've tried to put myself in their shoes, and figure out what I'd do if we were the country that had been invaded. We were wrong to go there, and what we're doing now is wrong.

7. shock and awe continues
didn't Saddam do this while running Iraq?

The US constantly says that civilians are not a target in this bogus war. But the US in Iraq controls the utilities, and according to this, are manipulating the people by manipulating their everday lives and needs. Targeting a civilian population to "wear them down" is a central tenet of shock and awe. I guess it's not over....

10. But don't call it reprisals or collective punishment
Because that would be illegal and contrary to the Geneva Conventions, to which the U.S. is a signatory. Just another old piece of paper to the corrupt Bush administration, which is succeeding in stripping the military of its humanity so it can engage in these war crimes and crimes against humanity without a twinge of conscience.

I'd give two shiny nickels to see Rumsfeld in the dock at The Hague.

12. But, but, just Thursday an "administration official" said Saddam punished
people in exactly that way!

Is insanity contagious?

13. Oh wow
I thought we were going in there to help the CIVILIANS!

Won't this create more problems than it solves, like maybe if I live in a town that MIGHT have insurgents in it and I hear about another town that gets its power cut because of the same reason, I think I would have some good motivation to join the resistance to try to keep that from happening or at least make them pay.
