Dean's response to Bush ad
Your Response
The following is the script for the ad that your campaign will launch responding to George W. Bush's attack. You can make it happen:

Misled
TV script -- 30 seconds
Narrator: The president misled us about weapons of mass destruction.

And we went to war when we shouldn't have.

Howard Dean is committed to fighting terrorism and protecting our national security.

But Howard Dean has been opposed to the war in Iraq from the beginning.

He believes it's time to have a foreign policy consistent with American values.

And it's time to restore the dignity and respect our country deserves around the world.

Howard Dean: I'm Howard Dean and I approve this message because our party and our country need new leadership.

Contribute now to show George Bush that the American people won't stand being lied to anymore.

1. I like it!
Especially about the lying at the end of the spot.

5. Dean was in Iowa, playing guitar at a bluesgrass bar, I think
I think it was taken sometime in September or August.

4. Kinda weak.
I wish it specifically said that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11 and talked about who's profiting from the war. But I'll kick in to help pay for it. It's a start anyway.

7. I agree
My initial response to that was "Weak, very weak". On the other hand I don't see any other candidates running response ads so it'll have to do. Or are there other responses I missed?

8. Yes...
How about a cut-in of Bush admitting that there was no link between Saddam and 9/11?

Then, maybe intersplice pictures of Hitler, Bush, Stalin and Mao.

11. One message at a time.
You need to keep the message simple. He could run two other ads, one dealing just with the Saddam/911 non link and one just about Haliburton's profiting by the war and Uncle Dick(head's) ties with the company. If you get one message across to your audience, you've done a good job.

9. complete your sentence, please....
You say:
"Howard Dean is committed to fighting terrorism and protecting our national security" but you don't tell us HOW. What does he propose? How would he handle the onslaught of terrorism? If you don't think he'll be pounded by these questions, you're mistaken.

I'm not seeing a compelling sales proposition in your script. Just bumperstick-jargon; that's fine for fellow-travellers at DU but where's the meat? Where's the pay-off soundbite that's worth the colossal cost to the Dean campaign of a national 30-sec. ad?

Doesn't anybody at DU take this election seriously. This isn't some joke.... what passes for insightful political content around her boggles the mind!

If Karl Rove lurks around here, you just made his day.

12. "fellow-travellers at DU?"
"Onslaught of terrorism?" Wow, red baiting and paranoia. Very nice.

Dean, as well as the other candidates, answer these issues very succinctly. Unlike Bush and the rethuglicans who accuse any one of being a traitor if they disagree with neo-con strategy.

13. who says it's a national ad?
the RNC's ad is only running in Iowa & New Hampshire.

I assume that's where Dean plans to run his ad too.

a national ad buy would costs millions of $.

17. It is a 30 second ad.
No one can lay out a plan to unravel a mess this complex in that time. To even try would be self defeating.

My first suggestion to combat terrorism would be to finally stop going to the middle east to change governments we don't like and blowing people up who get in our way.

Second would be to stop proping up repressive regimes with cash and military power.

Third would be to stop training foriegn secret police in techniques of repression and torture.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the drift.

We have done all of these things over and over during the last century. Establishing a sane foriegn policy (for the first time in a very long time) is only the first step, but an important one, in combating terrorism.

10. I don't think the "lied to" line is part of the ad.
It's part of the solicitation for donations sent out with the script.

The ad could be stronger if one sentence was lengthened:
But Howard Dean has been opposed to the war in Iraq because Iraq was never a threat to the U.S.
(or something to that effect). Interspersing Bush's admission that there was "no link between Iraq and Al Qaeda" would be strong, too.

15. Thumbs down - it's correct, but too dry.
Frankly, I've seen better flash anims from individuals on this theme. The makers of any highly paid ads need to review what's already been done for free. Some of it is brilliant.

18. Looks Like the Dean Folks Are Listening
They posted a notice tonight saying that the sample ad was a mock-up only, and they're not going to run it. Apparently they're getting a bunch of better ideas from the Blog tonight.

By the way, for those of you so inclined to chip in a buck or two, it'd be fantastic if you did it via Pilots for Dean. Click on the link below, then click on Contribute, and you're right in Dean's own contribution machine. But you're letting them know in Burlington that pilots are cool. :-)
