1. Grrr, this is an object lesson for those DLC apologists
who can't figure out why people go Green.

Fiascos like this are one big reason.

(Disclaimer: Yes, I will vote for the Dem nominee in 2004, but after that, all bets are off.)

18. f*ck em...
I'm seriously considering going Green unless Kucinich gets the nod.
The only way to send the party a message is to make them feel PAIN...the pain of losing...losing their BASE. I'm afraid its going to get worse before it gets better...Without principle, we have nothing. It's time to stand on principle. It's our only hope of pulling the party back to the left.

19. Did they all think they were doing something "nice"?
Or, as a friend said last night, "I wonder if Feinstein's husband owns a lot of pharaceutical company stock?"

Remember, Senator Diane Feinstein was one of twelve Democrats who crossed party lines to vote with the administration on the 2001 tax cut bill.

22. Not sure
Isn't Feinstein tangled up somehow with the AMA? Somehow this rings a bell.

I'm not surprised she voted for the bill. I lived in SF while she was mayor, and she was always a stooge for the developers and corporate pirates. I've never once cast a vote for her (although I supported Boxer in the Senate, and will continue to do so).

Lincoln - who knows?

Landrieu - one might think this was a show of solidarity with Breaux, but he isn't running next year so what's the point? I don't recall her speaking in favor of the bill, so her reasons to me are obscure.

10. Yup, Ron Wyden of Oregon
The man who cut his political teeth with the Gray Panthers, voted for this monstrosity. I tried to call his office yesterday, but the Washington line was busy and his Portland line ended in a full voice mail box. I'll try again today. My message will be simple: I thought that Oregon had at long last elected a Democratic Senator when Wyden won Packwood's vacated seat. It now appears that I was quite wrong.

Meaning they knew the bill was going to pass so they voted "No" to suck up to their conservative base.

13. Since when do the Pub Borg unit worry about safe votes?
Apparently only Dems do. I just feel ill, disgusted, and embarrassed for this party right now. I may recover my good humor in a few days, but for now, I'm pretty disheartened. Keeerist, the Rs are on the floor already making the same noises about needing to pass the energy bill soon so your lights don't go out when you next flick the switch. Does this sound familiar? Just hand over war powers before the mushroom cloud forms...just pass HR-1 before you run out of your current prescription...

And our reps keep falling for it.

39. I think you're right Robert
If the Republican votes were needed, Bush would have gotten them.

However, that still doesn't excuse the Democrats because what they've done is given Bush the chance to call this the "bi-partisan" medcare reform bill. And honestly, with 11 Democratic votes, he has a right to call it that.

He'll have ads on TV saying that

"For eight years Democratic congresses and a Democratic president promised prescription drug benefits, but they were too partisan to deliver. (cue the music) But President Bush, working with both Democrats and Republicans was able to get a bill finally past helping our seniors. -- President Bush, a Uniter, not a Divider."

11. Don't forget
that some of the republicans who voted NO, voted YES, yesterday when they COULD have blocked the bill. So, I think some of them, like Lott, voted NO today simply for show (so, in the worst case they can tell their constituents that they were against it, while in practice they guarenteed its passage). -CV

36. Thanks CV, you nailed it!
The Repugs played the Democrats like a fiddle. The Repugs made sure that the bill didn't die because the final closure vote on the Budget overage was 61 to 39. The bill could have died right on the Senate floor if those Repugs had voted with the majority Dems. They made damn sure that the bill was kept alive, however because they knew who would vote for it. It was a good strategy because after all how many people watch C-SPAN and know what really happened on the Senate floor. The Repugs will skate free on this one. Dems missed a great opportunity and now we're going to suffer the consequences.

21. Vote Them Out of Office !
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 10:48 AM by stewert
The democrats who voted yes should be thrown out of office in the next election. We
need to send these traitors a message, they were elected to represent the people. Yet
they sold out the people and voted against the party.

I plan to do a web page and call for these Senators to be voted out of office.

I just wrote Daschle and told him to resign too. He has betrayed the people and the
democratic party.

We need Dick Durbin to take over the minority leadership.

If your Senator is on the list write or call them and tell them how you feel. Lucky for
me my Senator is Dick Durbin, he is a real democrat who fights these bastards.

There were people on both sides of the aisle that thought is was a good bill, and people on both sides that thought it was a bad bill (although for different reasons). Doesn't happen all the time, but its a lesson in learning that not everything fits neatly into the Democrat/Republican dichotomy.
