Gay Marriage" issue: Newsweek has Dean's picture next to the
story entitled " My Mommies Can Marry". Media will saddle him with this and rPIGs will use it from now until the election if he wins the primary. From what I can gather most 'muricans are against it. Yes, I know theres that 40+ % who will vote rPIG, but I'm worried sick about those who can be influenced by this message that Rove will flood the media.

4. This is the smear...er..I mean..."wedge" issue for this season.
Plenty of gay Republicans. They just have enough money to stay comfortably in the closet.

We're so far on the right side of this issue.

11. It's also a lack of imagination on Rove's part.
Non-War's going bad, bogus positive economic figures don't jib with employment figures, none of the Democratic candidates have ever been accused of "sleeping around."

14. But of course that's o.k. . Gephardt's daughter on the other hand.
I've like Dean's position on this non-"issue" from the start---it's a state's rights issue, there's no federal law santifying heterosexual marriage, only state laws. Period.

15. Funny you should mention that.
Does anyone remember in the lone vice presidential debate in 2000 between Cheney and Lieberman, when both men were asked about civil unions and gay marriage. Cheney himself said that he would support some form of civil unions. He was quite reasonable, actually.

Maybe if the gay bashing starts in 2004, the Democrats could air that clip from the debate.

5. It's sad we've put 'votes' on human decency.
If Dean wins the nomination and debates Bush, I hope to god he says something like:

"Mr. President, are you telling the American people right now that you're ready to place a vote on human decency? Are you telling the American people right now that you value SOME Americans over another?. If you are, how the hell are you fit to lead this nation?"

7. If gay marraige is the defining issue in '04 that defeats Democrats
then we might as well turn out the lights in this country, tear up the bill of rights and constitution and all plug our brains into the big corporate mind port, eat and shit and send our kids to die in wars and watch The Bachelor moronic grins on our faces.

20. um . . . isn't that precisely what's happening now?
the Patriot Act effectively does away with the Bill of Rights, our collective brain is indeed plugged into the corporate mind port via television and the internet, our kids are dying in wars everyday, and the Bachelor is getting pretty good ratings . . . too late, friend . . .

8. Issues don't last that long
I'm kinda glad the saturation is happening now, because I think the ADD media will burn it out by the time the general election starts. Just like the 10 commandments...just like the pledge...late-term abortion, affirmative action, etc etc.

Maybe they'll try to revive & flood us with a buncha wedge issues at once, but that's too much for the media to handle. It's never happened like that before. I think they'll pick a new one and go with it - depending on who the nominee is.

18. Thanks, I hope you are right.
Maybe I am worried because some of the people I've heard around me (some Democrats, damn it) have said they wouldn't vote for anyone who "supports gay marriage".

9. All the candidates say they're for civil unions.
Dean just happens to be the only one who's put his career where his mouth is. The Repukes will use this against whoever runs.

Are you suggesting we shouldn't nominate Dean because of this? Or are you suggesting we dig in our heels and prepare of a hell of a battle?

12. Most people are not "single-issue" voters, are they?
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 04:31 PM by caledesi
I am a Dean supporter, and don't particularly like his stance on guns, but I am still voting for him (if he is the nominee).

edit: usual stuff

16. dean or any dem lose
if they act weak and waffle around on the subject.
they win if they attack the stupidity around the right wingers and then paste them for presenting america with an apartheid approach to living in this country. put the repukes on the ropes, on the defensive -- and watch them twirl in the wind.

hand a "gay marriage" millstone around their neck and accuse them of everything from corrupting our youth to destroying the American family . . . count on it . . .
