(This is dedicated to Dianne Feinstein, John Breaux, and all those Democrats that seem to have forgotten why they call themselves a "Democrat". One must ask if they ever knew why they chose the Democratic Party over the Republican Party? Did they simply register Democrat because that was the easiest path to election?)
I would like to tell all of you why I am a Democrat. In the first place, a Democrat believes in the basic goodness of America. From the time of our Revolution, thru the Civil War and slavery, thru the women's fight to get equal rights and the right to vote, to the present time, we have always believed in going forward and never backwards. We believe we have a destiny to make this a better nation and a better world.
We realize that we are only human and none of us is perfect. We do not pretend otherwise. However, we do believe that some ideas are more "perfect" than others. We believe in the power of ideas. For example, the idea of "justice" is more perfect than the idea of exploitation. That is why we support the labor movement and the working people of this country. We have fought for "justice" and fairness in the workplace.
The idea of "equal opportunity" in our public schools is superior to the idea of private schools and vouchers. Why? Because one is inclusive and the other is exclusive. The idea of "compassion" - with all its faults - is far superior to the idea of "survival of the fittest". That is why we support programs that help the children and the needy of this nation. The idea of "equality" is superior to the idea of discrimination. That is why we have supported Affirmative Action and the Civil Rights Act.
That is why we are Democrats. We believe our ideas are superior to those of the Republican Party. When those folks of the "radical right" say that we will go to hell if we do not believe the way they do, we say that if there is a God, that one of these days that "Old Man in the Sky" will look down at the Democrats on one side and the Republicans on the other side and say, "I LOVE THOSE DEMOCRATS..."
