Bush is no Lincoln
I'm getting awfully tired of CNN comparing Bush's lightning visit to Iraq to the visits Lincoln made during the Civil War. For one thing, Lincoln didn't slink in in the middle of the night (he only did that for his first inaugeration, and he was ashamed of being talked into it) to visit generals. Sure, he visited generals, but he also visited common soldiers and comforted the wounded from both sides. He actually faced enemy fire during Early's raid around Washington DC (Mary Todd actually wanted to pick up a rifle and fire back). He never felt that he was ordained by God to do what he did, but he did feel that he would give his life for his country in his service as President. To even mention Shrub's name in the same sentence is defaming the memory of a great and honorable President.

1. I couldn't agree more!
Lincoln sat at Jeff Davis's desk after walking through the streets of Richmond! Bush sneaked in and out of Iraq like a thief in the night!

3. Bush is certainly no Lincoln,
for reasons beyond Iraq. Only crack-smoking circus clowns could make such silly comparisons. Ok, maybe that's a bit harsh, but right now, he's no Lincoln. Maybe during that brief period after 9-11, but not anymore.

P.S. I await the hate mail for even praising him at all.

7. Not harsh at all
Those paid-for, sleek-headed whores on cable news are comparable to high-priced ho's in a swank Nevada brothel. Both are legal (at least outside of Clark county) and both will sacrifice any shame or integrity for a buck.

So no, it is not harsh, the cracksmoking clowns at least have an excuse for muttering such inane horseshit, the media ho'bags do not.

4. bush is more like David Herold,
who was one of the April 15th conspirators, and was known to be quite dim witted.

I do not receive CNN and was not aware that they are making such a comparison. Pathetic. One could say 'desperate', but that would be overly optimistic.

6. War Zone Visits -- Compare
*'s really, really pales in comparison.

• 1952: Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president-elect, visited Korean battle fronts in December.

• 1966 and 1967: President Lyndon B. Johnson made two wartime trips to Vietnam, visiting troops at the U.S. military command at Cam Ranh Bay.

• 1969: President Richard M. Nixon visited troops at Dian, about 12 miles south of what was then known as Saigon.

• 1990: President George H.W. Bush visited U.S. troops at a desert outpost in Saudi Arabia on Thanksgiving Day, in the run-up to the Persian Gulf War.

• 1999: President Bill Clinton addressed Kosovar refugees and NATO military personnel in Macedonia, two weeks after end of NATO airstrikes to drive Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo. Five months later, Clinton addressed Albanians and shared a Thanksgiving dinner with U.S. troops in Kosovo.

• 2003: President Bush paid a Thanksgiving Day visit to U.S. soldiers in a mess hall at Baghdad International Airport.

9. If Bush gave the Gettysburg Address
"Uh, four scores and seven hookers ago,
just kidding guys! Uh, Four-score and seven years ago
our fathers brought forth onto this continent, you know, a new
notion, Uh you know, that all um men are created, you know, equal...
We are gathered here upon this great battle field where weapons, you know of mass destruction uh, were evident and, you know, used by evildoers so that Mericans will not go away from this um Earth."

Bush is to Lincoln as Cheny is to honesty.

how does * get from, in his own words:

"You know I could run for governor but I'm basically a media creation. I've never done anything. I've worked for my dad. I worked in the oil business. But that's not the kind of profile you have to have to get elected to public office." George W. Bush, 1989

to Abe Lincoln in 2003 ...

13. His death count is still lower
600,000 americans dead is not heroism, especially when more human beings are in slavery today than ever before in human history.... the civil war accomplished little except creation of an evil federal government that does not respect the democratic choice of states.

Bush has only killed, depending on the count... 100,000 people. So, he's still 500,000 short of lincoln. Hopefully he'll never get there.

14. Please kindly remember
that Lincoln didn't start the war. It was started by fireeaters in Charleston, SC. And also remember that many of those 600,000 casualties were the result of the sad fact that medicine hadn't kept up with military technology.

As the descendant of Union soldiers who suffered and lost wealth and health in the cause of Union, I disagree with your historic assessment. Without the Union, the states would have gone their seperate ways and we would have been another version of Europe. I'm not saying that the federal government is perfect, but I do believe that it is better than what would have happened if states were allowed to secede at will. Also, there is no slavery in this country, and it stopped because of people like the men of the 54th Massachusettes, women like Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.

Finally, I don't think Lincoln ever looked upon himself as a hero (unlike the current occupant of the White House). Lincoln looked on himself as a very human being placed in a very stressful situation, trying his best to do what is right.

15. Lincoln thought of himself as an average man...
that had acquired an above average job.

The predominate thought that Lincoln had, was the preservation of the Union. Many of the political motivations, such as The Emancipation Proclamation, and the enlistment of Black troops, were designed to help break the South. While indeed noble, many of Lincoln's acts were politically motivated to end the war. He was incredibly politically astute.

Lincoln the man, was far from average. He was a deep thinker, and held dear to his heart the love of country that most of us take for granted. He refused to have the 13 stars, (of the Confederacy) removed from the Federal Flag because in his eyes, that justified the division in the country. Lincoln was fearless as well. During an early skirmish near DC, he climbed up on the earthworks to get a better view of the action, stovepipe hat and all. Many Confederates would have loved to take the shot that would have brought him down, but there he stood.

In Richmond, after its fall, Lincoln got out of his carriage and walked the streets, to the Confederate Capitol Building. Richmondites shuttered their windows, and closed their doors, and some looked out in awe at a man who would face death in a conquered capital.

One last thing about Lincoln as a man; his intention was to allow the former Confederate States to ease back into the Union, "with malice towards none, and charity for all". A bullet in Ford's theater changed that, and the South was doomed to a horrid reconstruction. Livestock, agriculture and population did not reach prewar levels until 1939; that's how devastating that war had been to the South. That single shot, by a coward that espoused the Southern cause, but refused to serve because of the danger to himself, helped to devastate even further, a section of the country that had already seen so much devastation.

Had Lincoln lived, I would say the country would be a better place, just as if JFK had lived. But then again, who really knows? Speculation is easy, reality is hard.

17. There is, of course, nothing of Lincoln in bush...
In fact the differences are striking.

I find it personally appalling that the GOP calls itself the "Party of Lincoln". Lincoln went to Antietam after the battle, and discussed the situation with MG McClellan; soon after, "Little Mac" was relieved because he would not move against Lee. Lincoln saw the carnage at The Cornfield, The Sunken Road, and Burnside's Bridge.

Lincoln knew war. He visitied the troops on numerous occasions, and often prayed with them during their darkest hours. His honor was that he would do all he could to bring about the end of the carnage, and to help the nation salve its wounds.

It has been said, that he was the last casualty of the Civil War, and unfortunately for the country, a dream of a reunited nation died with him; and the hatred that is born of fear and ignorance raged, uncontrolled, for years to come.
