Clark enlists Hollywood

General enlists Hollywood to ignite campaign
By Julian Coman in Washington
(Filed: 30/11/2003)

In an unlikely attempt to gain star backing for a slow-burning campaign, the Democratic presidential candidate, General Wesley Clark, is spending late nights talking politics with Madonna and wooing sympathetic supergroups such as The Eagles, with whom he recently shared the stage during a rendition of Hotel California.

Gen Clark, who had a cerebral and somewhat austere reputation during his military career, has spent much of the past month seeking out the late-night company of west coast rock stars, screen idols and movie producers. While his rivals preach to the worthy but unglamorous residents of early-voting Iowa and New Hampshire, Gen Clark is dressing snappily and going out on the town in LA.

After a 90-minute policy discussion with Madonna in her Los Angeles home recently, a friend of the star was authorised to disclose that "Madonna was very impressed with Gen Clark's intelligence and his vision for America". Another associate added: "Don't under-estimate this. Madonna is often ahead of the curve."

The showbusiness strategy reflects a change of direction by the Clark campaign team, which has already decided not to compete in the rural Iowa caucuses that launch the primary season.

Clark could be the scariest Dem to Republicans since Roosevelt.

28. Things change
Looks like Hollywood is no longer Dean country. As a matter of fact, from the article, it seems like one of the hollywood people I remember Dean supporters specifically naming on DU has switched to Clark.

My problem with all this is that I can not STAND the Eagles!!!! Didn't like them the first time I heard them back in the day, and it only got worse from there.

Everyone has at least one band whose sound they can not tolerate. This is mine.

7. Thanks again for
the positive comment in the positive thread started by a Clarkie about Clark.

In reference to Hollywood, I think that's great. Hollywood knows class when it sees it. And they know a winner. Lord knows that Bush hasn't been very good to that industry.

I live in Los Angeles.
I am married to a man who is smack-dab in the middle of the
industry. Class is the LAST quality you will find among the
den of slime that goes by the name "Hollywood."
The only person more willing to sell their children to the devil
than a politician is a "star."
They will actually kill the politicians kids to make sure
ther is no competition with the devil for the bargaining of their own.
As far as Madonna goes?
My friend worked with her- she is a total swine.
A nose picking, swearing, belching disgrace of womanhood.
Her money and fame has bought her the ability to forego
any and all social graces.
Glad to see Wes found someone he could really relate to.
A fellow corporatist disguised as a pop star.
Perect. Now our country and democracy is saved- no doubts here!

Perhaps how to use protools to edit the fact that

God this makes me ill.
The deception is so effective, so complete.
We are so screwed when a politicians visit to a scum bag
makes him legitimate.
Have you forgotten AHR-NOLD?
He is now GOVERNER!
Perhaps Clark was offering the big M a CEO position
with Clear Channel?

29. Me neither
California and Hollywood have traditionally be one of the prime fundraising venues and source of support for the Dem party. Winning their support will certainly help Clark's exposure and coffers. I certainly won't turn them down when we need everyone against Bush.

20. A simple phone call
from Bill Clinton to Barbra Streisand would have Clark in thick with the Hollywood crowd.

Madonna has a ton of money, connections and influence in Hollywood. I see NOTHING wrong with the General meeting with her. Pretty smart if you ask me. Think about it. If Madonna likes Clark and wants to support him, think about all the people she will influence with that decision. :bounce: His dashingly handsome face will fit right in in Hollywood!

22. Part you left out...
"Norman Lear, the creators of some of America's most famous sitcoms, gave Mr Dean a $2,000 campaign contribution last April. Last week, he was at Gen Clark's Eagles concert, having declared: 'I'm inclined to the general.' "

Norman Lear has a long history of philathropy and supporting liberal causes. And he's no fool.

24. Clark can talk to Madonna as much as he wants ...
as far as I'm concerned.

The woman ain't stupid and my guess is she has something to say about a variety of issues.

...as long as he doesn't show up to the next debate wearing one of those bra/cone things and wielding a cat-of-nine-tails. Then I would have a problem!

31. Let's get back to the article itself
On just the part posted.

First, we all know the Telegraph is a Murdoch rag, so the tone is naturally going to be snarky.

First sentence: "slow burning campaign". Maybe two months ago, it's now heating up.
Also : spending late nights - plural- Actually this past month, I belive Clark took ONE trip to Ca. He spent one evening talking to Madonna. This was the same trip where the Eagles played at a fundraiser.

Again: " spent much of the past month seeking out the late-night company of west coast rock stars, screen ..."
No it wasn't much of this last month. Clark has spent November in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, Oklahoma, Iowa for the debate, New York for a policy speech and I'm sure I left out others. This sentence is total bull and exaggeration. Again as I recall there was one trip to California.

The next sentence:
"While his rivals preach to the worthy but unglamorous residents of early-voting Iowa and New Hampshire" See above. I guess Mrs Johnson in South Carolina, who lost her son in Iraq, doesn't count; or the veterans at the VFW hall in OKC, or the countless others Clark has met this past month.

Last:
"The showbusiness strategy reflects a change of direction by the Clark campaign team, which has already decided not to compete in the rural Iowa caucuses that launch the primary season."

Notice how it implies that Clark doesn't care about "rural" folks. The money from show business types is a drop in the bucket compared to his other large and small donations.

Finally, this Clark supporter doesn't really care if he gets big bucks from the entertainment community. Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money - it's all good.

it is owned by the Hollinger group, until very recently owned by Conrad Black. Mind you, it is actually more right wing than the UK Times which is a Murdoch rag.
