Can someone help me understand something(s) about Dean?
1. What evidence is there that the Clintons would not support him in a general election? I get the feeling people believe that the Clintons don't like him but is some of this all media hype or simply an attribution given their relationship to the DLC?

2. Aren't there a lot of reasons why the Clintons should be VERY supportive of him? After all, Bill Clinton's politics are similar to Dean's in many ways and his candidacy was not all that different as an "outsider."

1. they would support him in the general election
Both Hillary and Bill will campaign hard for the eventual nominee. Both Hillary and Bill have said nice things about Dean in interviews. They may privately favor Clark but they will support Dean if he is the nominee.

Yes, Dean is very much like Clinton on domestic policy. He favors balancing the budget while funding things like health care and education. Dean favors rolling back the Bush tax cuts to Clinton era rates which were more targeted.

2. well
there is no REAL evidence that they would work against him. The idea is that he's too much of a maverick and that the Clintons want the way clear for Hillary in '08. I have no idea how much any of it is correct.

4. Clinton thought highly of him in 1997
I'd also like to say that whatever it is that Howard Dean knows, or whatever it is that he eats for breakfast every morning, if I could give it to every other Democratic office holder and would-be office holder, we would immediately become the majority in the Congress and we would have about 35 governors. I have to tell you, I think a big part of it is just producing for people, actually doing what you say you're going to do at election time.

5. Republicans are driving wedges in the Democratic base.
The spin for a few weeks was that the Clinton's were behind bringing Clark into the race, and that Dean, Kerry, and Gephardt should "stand up for themselves," which means doing the GOP's dirty work.

6. A Clinton snub of Dean was speculation from the Dem pundits
And that's all it was, based on the notion that Clintons are powerhitters in the Democratic Party, and Dean is upsetting to the power structure.
