Paisley 'will sack' any DUP member who talks to Sinn Fein - Guardian
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 10:29 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
So, Northern Ireland won't have a proper government because of the mad bigot Paisley who won't so much as talk a Catholic. Northern Irish Protestants should be ashamed that a plurality of them voted for this evil old man. I don't believe in assassination, but if I did, I know who i'd be targetting.

1. The greatest , longest hate war in the 1st world
continues into it's 2nd century? Religious wars are the hardest to eradicate. England should not be supporting this war and Ireland is the worse off for Paisley's hate mongering.

12. End it easily - the British have their own island
I do believe...

"Religious wars are the hardest to eradicate"

It has very little to do with religion.

2. I went to college...
With a girl who was related to Paisley(neice). She said that the rest of the family regarded the good rev. as a boorish embarassment.

4. Yeah, there'll be no progress until Paisley retires, I'm afraid
and knowing what I do of him, it'll be when he dies. It's sad that the progress of an entire people is held up by an old bigot.

5. Ian jr.
Unfortunately, just like the hate he spews the ir-reverend isn't going away anytime soon. Even if he dies tommorrow Ian Jr. is ready to take his place right away. As far as his assasination I can give you several reasons it hasn't/won't happen:

1) Assasinating politicians will put a (bigger) target on the backs of Sinn Fein MPs.

2) Really bad PR.

3) Irish Republicans "like" Paisely because he says what all the other ones feel but are too proper to say.

All that said, I wish a slow, painful death upon him and all his ilk.

6. Yeah, one reason I'm against killing him is the martyrdom factor.

7. I believe...
I believe that is exactly why the folks in the IRA, PIRA, RIRA, etc. have left off this mad bastard all these years. Offing him would turn him into some kind of Proddie martyr.

I personally don't think the old goat is ever going to buy the farm. He's too goddamned evil to die.

Junior is bad, but he's got nothing on his daddy.

I wonder if the DUP-types in Ulster were taking notes while watching the Afrikanners lose the demographics war?

11. "too goddamned evil to die" ???
Well, he received his Honorary Degree from Bob Jones University in 1966--about the same time as Strom Thurmond. Also receiving honors from that august institution: Lester Maddox, George Wallace, Jesse Helms and--more recently--John Ashcroft. (The Paisley family retains strong ties with BJU.)

8. How is this a suprise?
People do not join the DUP because they wish to talk to catholics. People join the DUP because they belive that any attempt to negociate with the other side amounts to nothing less than complete surrender. Anyone of a moderate unionist complexion opts for the Ulster Unionists, not the DUP in the same way that Catholic moderates tend to go for the SDLP and not Sinn Fein.

And just to be even-handed, I must point out that there are those on the other side of the divide who are just as bad. The trouble is, it's the nasties who are gaining ground in Ulster. :scared:

9. Undoubtedly there are many Catholic nasties as well.
Unfortunately, Paisley currently has the most power.

13. Cough cough
agreed. Every group has nasties. That said, I think it's undeniable that Sinn Fein made a big leap with the GFA. It essentially takes a united Ireland off the table until the population mandates it. This is democracy. Arms are being destroyed and more will as more of England's side of the GFA come to fruition (Patten). I see SF as making steady progress towards a SDLP paradigm while the DUP is just stuck in the mud. Of course, I'm biased.

14. Er....Scott
The DUP is a hardline Unionist party, and the entire point of that party is to promote Ulster as part of the UK with ahem "NO SURRENDER" to anyone who thinks differently.

That is the entire reason for the DUP's existence and itis not a cause that I can support. The bottom line is though that Paiseley is not going to go away, it's more a question of getting the moderates to eclipse the nasties. Therein lies the problem. The moderates lost out at the last election and the nasties on both sides gained. :scared:
