Boy punished for talking about gay mom
I hope all parties involved sue this school, and be forced to make a formal apology.

Dec. 1, 2003 | LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write "I will never use the word `gay' in school again" after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Monday.

Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess Nov. 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.

Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint.

A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word `gay' in school again."

11. I see a difference
between the two, yes. But when schools take to punishing people under zero tolerence policies and the word "gay" is a punishable offense, then the difference is irrelevant.

And I don't think the other girl should have been punished either.

13. Right, but I think we can all agree that zero tolerance is bullshit.
i don't know what punishment the girl got, but I don't think a verbal scolding is uncalled for in her case.

14. I think you are reading that into this story or deliberately obfuscating
the issue. Is there a zero tolerance policy in this parrish on the word gay? Or are you bringing some other agenda to this story?

4. And innocent students will lose out...
...because of a teacher's stupidity and/or bigotry.

8. When school districts lose enough money, maybe they will focus on
education instead of dumping their morality on all the kids subjected to their right wing tripe.

5. I think the little boy should
be able to watch the folks who made him write "never say gay", write "I will never embarass a 7 year old for loving his moms".
