M$'s new OS, "Longhorn", due out in 2 years, is available now in Malaysia
JOHOR BAHRU, Malaysia (Reuters) - Malaysia's brazen software pirates are hawking the next version of Microsoft's Windows operating system years before it is supposed to be on sale.

(snip)

The software is an early version of Longhorn demonstrated and distributed at a conference for Microsoft programmers in Los Angeles in October, Microsoft Corporate Attorney Jonathan Selvasegaram told Reuters.

"It's not a ready product," he said from Malaysia. "Even if it works for a while, I think it's very risky," to install on a home computer, he said.

Chairman Bill Gates has said Longhorn, which is not expected to be released before 2005, would rank as Microsoft's largest software launch this decade.

3. I mentioned this in an earlier thread.
I say, poach away! If Bill Gates is determined so screw the world, Malaysians are well within their rights to stick it to Microshaft.

9. huh? what are you looking for?
Linux is a far better OS than MSW. *UNIX* is proprietary, but there are numerous BSD varients around that are free, and of course Linux.

Want to use your computer-- the pinnacle of a MULTIBILLION DOLLAR research, development, and manufacturing effort spanning nearly 50 years-- to play games or entertain yourself? Windows is your OS. Want to use your computer for computing? Look elsewhere.

That 50 years you stated must be a typo, Microsoft has not been around nearly 50 years. In fact, Bill Gates was born In 1955, you do the math.

16. Windows is your OS
My Error :)

I assumed he was referring to Microsoft when he stated ( the pinnacle of a MULTIBILLION DOLLAR research, development, and manufacturing effort spanning nearly 50 years ) and then stated ( to play games or entertain yourself? Windows is your OS.)

10. There are several.
Yellowdog Linux is very good. I use OSX, and if you check around you will see that with the Panther Release, the OS has matured.
Listen to what the BBC has to say.

The leak is bad for MS as far as profits goes, but good as far as marketshare.

5. I Read That Earlier
And it runs 92 pence versus $100 and up for the OS. I've also noticed where M$ is also incorporating features of "Longhorn" into patches and fixes for Win 2000/XP.

That being said I have no desire to use it at the moment, I've just gotten used to my tamed version of XP Pro Corporate edition.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 01:03 AM by Nomad559
Alpha builds of Longhorn have been leaked on the net for
months now, I downloaded the latest build (4051) last month.
It's actually very stable for a pre-beta build.

Some screen captures I took of It.

18. Beta versions of MS OS software are usually easy to get
They start shipping to MSDN Subscribers fairly early and those copies get circulated quickly. Then, of course, the earlier betas get leaked immediately too. Hell, all it takes is a quick search of Kazaa or other, lesser known sources to obtain copies of the stuff.
