Politcal State Nicknames, from the Clearcut State to the Lone Party State
I'm creating a political website for children (general audience, actually) that will include information on each of the fifty states. I'd like to think up a clever nickname for each state, generally modeled after the real nickname, though there are no strict rules.

It's hard because I don't yet have an intimate of knowledge in all of the states. So I wondered if any of you might have some suggestions. Here are some ideas I'm playing with, to serve as examples:

Alaska: Land of the Midnight Thaw (relates to global warming)
California: The Total Recall State (or The Left Coast)
Florida: The Lost Election State
Hawaii: The Patriotic State (for its stand against the Patriot Act)
Minnesota: The Wellstone State
Missouri: The First Plane Crash State
Oregon: The Unemployed State
Texas: The Lone Party State
Virginia: The Right-Wing State
Washington: The Clearcut State (Real nickname - The Evergreen State)

Nicknames can be either positive or negative; they just have to be based on something relevant to a state, whether it's a person, a political party, an event, etc. Can you suggest some political state nicknames?

1. Some liberal things Hawaii has done or things about Hawaii
Legislature passed a resolution urging the President to get a UN resolution first before going to war with Iraq.

Emphasis on the environment

Nobody can own beaches here (However, I think the Republican governor is trying to change that...she better not, or there will be people banging down the doors of her residence)

Multi-racial state (very diverse)

2. Thanks...those are useful tips.
I'm going to write brief introductions for every state, focusing on how it has been impacted by 9/11, the war against terrorism, Microsoft, etc. I think I'm finished with the design; now I just have to add some information for each state!
