Repubs "Luxury Liner" idea about to become a big issue.
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/12/01/nyregion/01SHIP.html?hp

<snip>
As for the more ephemeral issue of perception, the proposal to remove visitors from the hubbub of city life has been broadly received as a slight — a suggestion that the city's hotels and restaurants, not to mention its people, are not quite good enough for Republicans from out of state.

Republicans are not necessarily happy, either. Many say the cruise ship could undermine one reason New York was chosen for the first time in the party's history as the site of its convention: to help advance the idea that Republicans are the new big-tent party, trying to embrace all voters.

<snip>
Representative Peter T. King, a Republican from Nassau County, said: "I won't be on the ship. If they want to have it, fine." But, he added, "I think it could send the wrong signal, that Republicans are isolated from the city, just wining and dining and drinking and not being part of city life."

That is exactly what has New York's Democrats chortling. "What is it? They don't want to be contaminated by us?" said Representative Charles B. Rangel, a Democrat from Harlem. He vowed to wage a campaign against the cruise ship and criticized Mr. Bloomberg for not speaking out more vociferously. "It is a very, very unfriendly thing to do," Mr. Rangel said.

1. No, don't wage a campaign--let them do it--it would blow up in their
faces--can you imagine the bad press coverage they'll get during the convention if they have this?????

8. Why do they Hate America?

Do they Hate America so much that they are holding the Republican convention off-shore?

Are they exporting their Convention like they are exporting our jobs ?

Are they afraid to be on American soil? Can't they protect us? Do they know something they are not telling us? .....again?

32. Hedy Lamarr was a woman before her time...
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 01:53 PM by Beaker
http://www.computerworld.com/mobiletopics/mobile/story/0,10801,76692,00.html

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth trace their roots back to Hollywood starlet Hedy Lamarr.

Story by Frank Hayes

DECEMBER 16, 2002 ( COMPUTERWORLD ) - The unlikely birthplace of modern mobile and wireless technology was a Hollywood dinner party in 1940, in a conversation between actress Hedy Lamarr—dubbed "the most beautiful girl in the world"—and film composer George Antheil. The topic? How to build a radio-controlled torpedo that couldn't be jammed by the Nazis.

Lamarr's first husband was a munitions maker, and she knew torpedoes. Her idea was to change frequencies rapidly to keep the radio signals to the torpedo from being jammed. Antheil's first major composition, Ballet Mechanique, used synchronized player pianos, and he suggested using paper rolls with holes punched in them to implement Lamarr's frequency-hopping idea.

In 1942, Lamarr and Antheil received a patent for the invention of spread-spectrum radio, which would eventually become the basis for wireless networking and many digital cellular telephone systems. But details of the invention were kept secret, even though the U.S. Navy decided not to use it. After all, there was a war going on...

Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 10:34 AM by PDittie
it would be an example of nearly every single thing people hate about the Republicans: elitist, classist, contemptuous of the common person, dismissive of 1st Amendment rights (protestors on land and sea will be kept far, far away)...

They would deny the city all of the revenue associated with their convention yet still incur the expense (security, etc.) Do you think that would make any New Yorker from Mayor Bloomberg on down very happy?

I say, encourage them to do it.

40. Helipad at the Garden
I think helicopters could land on the roof of the Garden. But there are lots and lots of tall office buildings (with windows for snipers) all around and looming over the Garden, so I don't know how "secure" it would be.

I like the ship idea. I envision a F*** YOU banner hanging from every window on the West Side so they can be seen from the Hudson.

18. Does anyone remember Dick Tuck?
He was a Democrat who drove Nixon crazy with his tricks. Likre one time when Nixon was making a speech from the back of a train, Dick Tuck somehow managed to trick the engineer into pulling away from the station. Wouldn't it be a blast if we could find a way to get the cruise ship to drop anchor in the middle of the night and go to sea just before the first day of the GOP convention!!!

33. They need a place where they can snort coke and screw hookers
away from that "lib'rul" New York City, where people might talk of their "moral malfeasance".

Of course, like Nazi prostitution houses, the Cruise Ship is going to have hookers who's loyalty is pre-certified and where the cocaine is Bush Special #1 (CIA Grade) and all the dealers are delegates to the convention, thus ensuring loyalty.

With the Cruise Ship, the Busheviks won't even have to kill anyone, except perhaps some protestors.

I mean, they are gonna have to rely on dock workers, right??? Don't the Longshoremen have a say on what goes on on their docks?

Maybe we could get a couple of tugs to gingerly move it out to sea while everyone's asleep onboard one convention evening.
