Kerry support in Iowa continues to grow at the top
"The Kerry Campaign announced today that twenty-three of Iowa’s state legislators have pledged their support for John Kerry...

...The total number of sitting legislators publicly supporting John Kerry continues to be more than that of Dick Gephardt and Howard Dean combined, and double that of any other candidate..."

http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/releases/pr_2003_1201f.html

I find this kind of support very impressive.
Kerry may not be "popular" as far as the polls go but he is certainly persuading a formidable array of elected officials- both current and former, that he is the man for the job. Perhaps others will find this persuasive as well.

2. *snore*
Polls are still showing Dean with a 10% lead over Gephardt and John Kerry is tied with Gephardt. True, Gephardt is losing support, but John Kerry is an Senator through and through and is no Presidential material. I still continue to puzzle as to why you would vote for a whiner, a S&B member, richest Senator, and a total jerk who votes his way, not the constitutents way?

10. No Presidential Material? Compared to who? Bush?
Whiner? You mean like people who whine whenever Kerry is even mentioned at DU?

S&B? Talk about "snore". This so called "secret society" isn't giving power to the Bush family...the media, the weak Dems, and the uneducated voter is.

Richest Senator? So the fuck what?

Votes his way, not the constitutents way? Do you think the people always know what's best? How about the 50 million who voted for Bush?

We've heard you say these things Over, and Over, and Over.

Got anything new?

3. There were some articles on NPR a couple of weeks ago
where they were interviewing potential voters for the NH primary, ( and maybe Iowa also, I can't remember) and one of the predominant sentiments was that people were looking for the candidate they thought could beat Bush.

It seems that Kerry's doing well in that regard when it comes to elected officials. I think he will surprize a lot of people, when it comes time to actually cast a vote. These early primaries are always fluid - who know's what could happen.

not one that flares and fizzles.

5. A double-edged sword?
I'm sorry, but my first reaction to this was, oh great, so Kerry's popular with the elite.

Of course, this really is quite good news for Kerry, but if us voters weren't so cynical & mistrusting of "insider" politicians, then he should rightfully be the top dog - with all of his endorsements.

Earl Blumenaur (Oregon) - who I respect very much - also endorsed Kerry, btw. Maybe it will start to sink in.

I'm still undecided.

8. That's the rub, rucky. Kerry has always been an outsider.
He was the guy stuck investigating BCCI and IranContra mostly on his own because many Democratic officials didn't want that boat rocked. Kerry pushed it through and when it came time for hearings based on Kerry's work they kept Kerry OUT of the picture because they said he was "too hot".

Even though he belonged to the DLC, Kerry maintained a voting record closest to Wellstone, even while the centrists in the party (like Dean and Lieberman) were pulling the party and the DLC further right. He has always been someone who didn't fit in, and that is why so many establishment Dems have grudges against him.

17. but they can influence their constituents
Just to note, Iowa has 100 representatives and 50 senators.
So Kerry has earned the backing of 16% of the reps and 14% of the senators.

12. Wholesale/retail
This will be an interesting study in both methods. Dean seems to be doing the retail and Kerry the wholesale.

Pay close attention to how it plays out. I plan to watch and learn.

13. You are really smart!
National political campaigns ( the daily machinations) bear absolutely no similarity to the media reports about them.

Just kidding. I am certainly happy whenever a "politician" endorses Dean.

Much smarter to attract supporters by embracing politicians than to attract politicians by embracing supporters.
