Boise Idaho: proposed hate monument for Julia Davis Park
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 11:34 PM by Selwynn
I was laying at home tonight half asleep when I flipped the channel to the local news.

Some baptist group from michigan has submitted an official proposal for a new monument for Juila Davis park, the main downtown park in Boise, Idaho. The monument is being considered.

The momment is this:

A picture of Matthew Shepered -

With the words:

"Matthew Shephered entered Hell on (Date of his death - no, wait.. make that day of his brutal torture and murder). Because he ignored God's Law, If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable, Leviticus 20:13"

They want to put this monument in downtown Boise and my city is actually considering it.

You know what my reaction was?

I just cried. It's like I just don't have any other emotion left in me... I just cried...

3. I am dumbstruck
Now you know why those of us living west of your great state are willing to drive out of our way to get around it.

The last time my husband was there, he was refused service in a restaurant for being with a group that included a black woman.

4. They're actually considering it?!?
I heard that that Phelps guy was trying to get one of those put in the city in Wyoming where Matthew was from, but they were all like hell no. Why Boise? And why the HELL would they consider it?

:spank:

5. I don't know what "considering it" means - a city lawyer said:
"we'll examine the proposal and if the monument contains any religous language than it would violate federal law so..." So I don't know if that's like saying "this is not a serious thing and will never happen" or what.

I DO know that there is a monument of the ten commandments in Julia Davis park, justified because no city money was used in its purchase and no city money is used in its maintenance, so its ok I guess to be on public property...

6. Well - I got my second wind...
..so tomorrow I'll be calling the local ACLU branch, and talking to the director and finding out is it serious and if so what they are doing about it. Then I'll be contacting the Ada County Human Rights Taskforce (yeah, I can't believer there actually is an Ada County Human Rights Taskforce) and finding out if they know about it, how serious it is, and what is being done about it.

Tonight I'll be emailing my friends and getting the word out....

8. What can the ACLU do?
Would this be a public or private monument?

9. It's being put in a public park...
which means they can contest it in court and they can help get the word out to turn public support, which I am proud to say that there is considerable ammount of local opposition to this thing.... even the ten commandments excuse that it was funded with private money wouldn't hold up if anyone around here bothered to contest it - its on public property, just like the Supreme Court building.

7. I'm certain that if that were to go up....
there would be a tremendous outcry from people all over this nation to remove the damn thing. Such over-the-top and naked hatred hurts these bigots' cause far more than they think.

Vile is too kind a word for Fred Phelps and people like him. :grr: :nuke:

10. I can't imagine that going over even in Boise, Idaho.
The citizens should really raise a stink about this. It sounds like a fringe group trying to monopolize a public place. The only way to stop it is to rally the citizens into driving these creeps out of town.
