The Colorado Redistricting Case
Did Ken Salazar, the AG, bring up Latino Civil Right issues.

From what I noticed the following counties would have been removed or split from the third into the fifth.

Sauguche
Las Animas
Hueferno
Costilla
Pueblo

Aren't there lots of Latinos in those counties? Couldn't the third, in its previous form, been able to elect a Latino as opposed to the new one that got rejected?

1. I don't know if salazar bought up civil rights - I think he based his case
on the Colorado constitution and the "only redistrict once in a ten year period. I could be wrong.

It was definately the republican strategy to split off those counties because they were Dem. (and probably because of their high Hispanic numbers)

Here's a fun little link:

3. Well
I noticed that the new maps would have hurt Hispanic voters significantly.

4. The plan would have split both city and county of Pueblo.
They would have been folded into El Paso County's district and diluted the Democratic and rural vote across southern Colorado. The Republicans will decide today if they will appeal. Probably waiting for Karl's advice.

5. I am sure they will appeal
They are hoping that the USSC will consolidate the TX case--along with Colorado--and then reverse the rulings of CO's Supreme Court.
