GOP TRIES TO BOOST DEAN BY BURYING HIM
Thu Dec 4, 4:05 AM ET Add Op/Ed - New York Post to My Yahoo!

By DEBORAH ORIN

HOWARD DEAN and Republicans share one big dream - to see Dean become the Democratic 2004 presidential nominee.

It's fascinating to watch Republicans do their best to boost Dean.

Take the Republican National Committee (news - web sites)'s decision to run a TV ad in Iowa that paints Democrats as undermining President Bush (news - web sites) in the war on terror. It says, "Some are now attacking the president for attacking the terrorists."

Antiwar, anti-Bush anger boosted Dean to the top of the Democratic pack and a pro-war Republican ad is sure to infuriate and energize Dean fans - and focus political debate on the very issue that helps Dean the most.

"It's very smart - every time they pick fights with Dean, it just serves to elevate him in the Democratic race," says a Republican strategist. "It's good for both of them. Both sides want a Dean-Bush race."

Why? Because polls suggest Dean would be pretty close to the weakest Dem against Bush and he offers the sharpest contrast in ideology and personal style.

So this week Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie went to Dean's home state of Vermont to zing him, then did it again last night in politically potent New Hampshire - and he hit Dean harder than any other Dem has.

Republicans are trying to cleverly take advantage of the surprise dynamic of the race - attacking Dean just reinforces his support. And since Dean fans hate, hate, hate Bush, they love Dean even more when Bush allies attack him.

32. "The truth"...don't make me laugh...
This is clearly an op/ed piece. Stating fact is news, conclusions based on an interpretation of those facts are opinions.

You DO realize that this "reverse psychology" claim can go on forever, don't you?

They don't want to face him...yes they do, so they'll pretend they don't...no they don't, so they'll pretend they don't, which makes some people think they really do...yes they do, so they'll pretend they don't, which makes some people think they do, so some other people think they really don't....and on and on and on....

Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 07:54 AM by ithacan
what it shows is that the RNC are so overconfident and out of touch with this country.

Dictators often fall because they are overconfident: They start to believe their own propaganda.

The Bushies sure look like they did that on Iraq.

It seems pretty clear that it's true in this case too. If they really believe this, all the better for us. They'll be feeling less desperate and might actually allow the election to proceed in the false belief that they will sweep it.

One doesn't need to be a genuis to figure out the scam. I hope.

I'd have to force myself to the voting booth to cast a vote for Dean or Lieberman. A vote for Dean is a vote for the NRA and both Dean and Libermans are conservatives.

43. You assumption makes no sense
Dean has raised more money in a single quarter than any other democratic candidate ever -- ever, including Bill CLinton.

He has the widest geographical support of any democratic candidate, receiving contributions from 6,000 zip codes (to Clark's 1,698, for comparrison).

He has half a million supporters signed up over the Internet, more than any other candidate.

He has over 150,000 grassroots voluteers attending Meetups, more than all the democratic candidates AND George Bush COMBINED.

AND YET, combine a few few keystrokes with your Chicken Little fear and you come to the completely unsubstantiated conclusion that "Many will sit out the general election."

Stand up to Rove and Bush for a change, for Christ's sake!

This can be SO EASILY turned back on Bush in a way America understands...Bush sealed every little detail about his life and his Poppy's. Dean needs to look America in the eye and tell them that. Explain it to them. Then say, again..."I'll open mine if you open yours." And stick to the damn positiion. STOP GIVING IN!

how the republicans want Dean to be the nominee.

So I commented on that.

About Gephardt, yes, the GOP will do some of the same things, but I don't think he is as vulnerable as Dean would be.

One reason is because Gephardt has strong labor ties, and he is from an important area of the country in terms of electoral college, the mid-west. And Missouri is a key state. Dean is from a tiny state in New England that is not important like the mid-west states are.

I really don't think that it is going to matter who runs against Bush because as long as the media is on his side, and they certainly haven't let up, he will cruise to re-election, sadly.

I want to say that things will be different, but unfortunately, they will have to get worse before they get better and if the press is still not reporting objectively or simply not reporting, most people won't know any better.

awol charges or drug charges against Dean, given what we know about youthfull indescretions.
The GOP wants to win. They think that they can easily beat Sharpton, Braun, Kucinich, and Dean. Hell, they probably think that they can't lose. Dean is the only one that might get the nod to run, so they hype up his issues.
Dean is also the only one with "legs" in this campaign. He has defined himself as a contrast to Bush, the least of the Bush lites (with Braun, Kucinich, and Sharpton as the only people outside of the lifelong ruling class group).
Rove looks stronger in the eyes of the gop supporters if he roots for (and is willing to take on) the one who looks the most different from Bush (but is still ruling class ~ Bush Lite). Rove would look silly conceeding that he really wants Al Sharpton to win.
Rove can't really say that he wants Clark. Both Bush and Clark are war heros (again, in the insane gop rewrite). Rooting for Clark would bring up Bush's sevice record. Rove would gain zero.
I contend that the Dems will not pick up any state in 2004 that they didn't win in 2000, except perhaps Ohio. Dean has the orgainization to GOTV in crucial states. That is why he is my choice. (perhaps this is why Rove likes him as well - the gop machine is better than all the dem camps combined. they can out work us with their money.)

41. OK how about this...
KKKarl Rove and his kind were (may still be) pumping Dean. They started building Dean up in the summer. They were also logging on to Dean's website and giving $$$.

Republicans are already voting with their wallets for Howard Dean, logging on to Dean's official Web Site and donating various sums of cash to the left wing candidate's primary campaign. They want Dean to win the Democrat primary. The real question now emerges. Will rank and file Republicans cross over and vote in the Democrat Primary elections to help get Dean the nomination? More at link below:

http://www.washingtondispatch.com/article_6309.shtml

Now they are saying that they are scared of Dean. He's now considered a threat to Bush.

Check this...

All the top-tier Democratic challengers can beat Bush, but Dean poses the biggest threat. Republicans once hoped Dean would get the nomination to run against Bush. No longer. As Dean continues to gain support and break fund-raising records by drawing on 100,000s of supporters, the Bush brain-trust (Karl Rove) and the pro-Bush media have changed their minds. More at link below:

http://www.apj.us/20031114Hersh.html

I wish the ReThuglicans would QUIT MESSING IN OUR PRIMARY ELECTIONS. So, now they are trying to flip the script because we caught on. Make it sound like they are afraid of Dean so that will pump up support.

I guess the lesson from this story is that we should just play our game and forget about the BS.

You'll love this! The pix of KKKarl @ Deans parade in July/03 http://www.sf.indymedia.org/news/2003/07/1624957.php

I know who the real threat to Bush is. It is Wesley Clark. Why else would they have him pulled from CNN. Why else would they put a media blackout on Clark's campaign? Why else would they be making sure that the media play all Dean all the time?
