College Dems to send packages to soldiers
<http://www.dailyemerald.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2003/12/03/3fce137f9a04b>
The University's College Democrats are preparing to send gift packages to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to demonstrate their support for the troops and provide the sand-weary soldiers some comfort.
The "Hate the War, Love the Warrior" program aims to put items such as cotton socks, books and magazines, tuna, baby wipes, trail mix and Frisbees in the hands of U.S. soldiers fighting to stabilize Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Anything that could be good on a day off," College Democrats Secretary Sarah Koski said of the materials being sent.

And here is my quote, "We feel that, while we dislike the war in Iraq, that's no reason to make these people out there doing their job suffer," College Democrats spokesman Chris Halverson said. "It's not their fault that George W. Bush sent them to Iraq."
I was going to put this in LBN, but I decided that would be too presumptuous. If you guys feel the need you could not just post your comments here at DU, but also on the ODE page. That would make them want to cover the College Ds more, which would be cool, we'd get our message out!

4. Meaning
"kick" means you are simply posting something to a thread so that it stays at or near the top of the listings. Otherwise it can scroll off, and others might not see it.

n/t, nm, eom mean various things (no text, no message, end of message) indicating that you intended to leave it "blank". (But if you just left it blank, people might wonder if you accidentally posted.)

3. Some folks in VT
wonderful people, couldn't find more conscientious parents. When their little red-haired, freckled boy hit his late teens, he became a serious handful. Starting with scrapes with the law and evolving into criminal schemes. He was given the option--army or jail. So, now he is in Bagdad, where apparently he and some crooked Sarge take funds slotted for Iraqi reconstruction and make runs down to Kuwait and buy goods--TVs, CDs and other toys to market to the soldiers...

Such is war. My father told me the packages of food from his sisters were always a big event. They boiled water for pasta in their helmets.
