Black Penn State students object to Web photos (college GOP)
Call on head of College Republicans to resign

Thursday, December 04, 2003

Associated Press

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Penn State Black Caucus called on the chairman of the university's College Republicans to resign after finding on his personal Web site a photo of a white man in blackface and another with a Ku Klux Klan reference.

Black Caucus president Tiffanie Lewis today said the pictures were inappropriate for the leader of a student organization and urged for the resignation of Brian Battaglia, chair of the College Republicans, and anyone else involved in posting the pictures.

"It's not an isolated incident. We believe that it's part of the contentious racial climate at Penn State," Lewis said.

8. LOL re: We can be offensive as we wanna be = free speech
but if anyone calls us on it (eg - free expression of opinion)... they are a threat to democracy.

See the irony in his letter? How typical. Welcome to the "New PC".

12. Yep
He does not know what the word "censorship" means. To him "censorship" his somebody saying they are offended by his speech and demanding that he take responsibility for his hateful remarks. Nobody is calling for them to be put in jail.

10. better to let him stay on
racism is easier to point out when it is blatant. if the current guy resigns, he'll just be replaced by someone with the same racist views, but who now knows that subtlety is required.

the penn state black caucus should demand that the guy retain his position, insist that he keep his web page exactly as it is, and petition the university to make a visit to his web page a prerequisite for admission to the school. maybe even make them write an essay. i think that making people think about racism is key in eradicating it.

i also think it is good, when i am pointing out to my not-so-left friends that the repug party is the (wealthy) white guy party it is helpful to have websites such as this that i can point to, making my point that much better than i could with many words.

13. Uh, yeah
I was not going to mention that, but I'm sure there will be many people who decide to send him a message--if that is even his real number.

16. btw photos are gone
pages are cached, but halloween party pics are gone. if he decided to take a stand, why take them down? be bold, brian.

or

maybe it was the liquor? is everyone 21? 1/2 gallons are obvious in the dinner party pics that still remain cached... maybe that's why the statement about if anyone else is in posession of those photos (by stealing from HIS web page), they are in violation.
