The Reagans - what was all the poo-ha about?

I just lasted until 1979 in the movie and I don't understand what the big fuzz was about.
Reagan comes across as a goodwilling, (dare I say compassionate?), kindhearted man, trying to do his best for his country.

Nancy is somewhat neurotic, and the family is slightly disfunctional, but other than that...I might start to like the guy if I see any more of this.
