FIGHT TERRORISM : New Texas Specialty License Plate
Edited on Fri Dec-05-03 10:58 AM by elfwitch
This morning I was looking up on the Texas Motor Vehicle Registration and Titling website what it is going to cost me to re-register my car this time around. One of the Specialty plates being offered by the state this year:

Fight Terrorism License Plate
Two plates are issued to passenger cars or light trucks. A fee of $30 is charged in addition to the regular registration fee and other applicable fees. The application and specialty license plate fee are submitted to the Vehicle Titles and Registration Division.

I really had to hold back a :puke: on this one.

Any of your states doing silly stuff like this?

Somebody PLEASE tell me...I must REALLY love my parents or something.

Allow me to quote Charles Emerson Winchester III: "I will put this as eloquently and succintly as possible: GET ME THE HELL OUT OF HERE!"

4. "specialty" plates are a problem for law enforcement.
Here in Illinois, there are 56 different specialty plates offered for police to keep track of-

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/lpguide/specialty_plates.pdf

In the past, some of the plates have had smaller, harder to read numbers than the regular plates, and as such were popular with gang members, because it was harder for Police and witnesses to read them quickly.

15. hmmm
Usually I see the alumni association plates for the Univ. of MD and other colleges, but I have seen a lot of the veteran/military plates (I have one, myself).

As a runner up, I have seen a number of Humane Society plates. Even the "Dental Hygenists" plate.

8. Where does the 30 bucks go?
Like all voluntary taxes, it probably is just used to offset the giveaways to big corporate donors. I am sure it is not being used to "fight terrorism", whatever that means.

12. $29.50 goes straight to the Highway Dept.
The other $0.50 goes to the county of the license plate holder. Yeah, that's fighting terrorism alright. Heck, if the $29.50 went to the Dept. of Public Safety or something, maybe. MAYBE. But, right to the highway dept? Give me a break.

18. This has to go to our broke highway department
Perry "the shirt" (with the rest of the republicans) have moved all their funds to the general revenue and we are now building toll roads. All the gasoline taxes we pay have disappeared to the general revenue black hole. Our bridges are in terrible need of repairs, as well as our state highways.

21. I've seen many in Virginia.
But I live pretty close to the Pentagon so I'm sure it's quite personal to many people who own them. I really don't see the problem here. People want these plates, the government charges them to have it. How is it different from the pro-animal or pro-reading plates I see all the time?

Fighting terrorism means identifying and eliminating the elements that create the conditions of terrorism (it's in the dictionary) i.e. poverty, poor education, etc. that exists in third world countries. Not the only definition, but it's mine.

Fight Ignorance

We fight ignorance by sending the money to schools and to organizations that would work to bring integrity back to journalism (TV and print). What better way to make the world better than to help people realize that they are being duped?

28. how do you define a terrorist?
History has taught that being labled a patriot or a terrorist depends on what side of the fight you are on. In the American Revolution the colonists were terrorists as far as Britain was concerned.

When I took Texas history in 7th grade, we had an excerpt from a Mexican history book about the battle of the Alamo in our Texas history text. The Mexican history book labled the people at the Alamo as rebels and insurgents.

And if you use the * Administration definition, anybody who disagrees with THEM is a terrorist.

you'd have an argument. The money goes to the highway department. How is that helping fight terrorism?
