GOP wont extend jobless benefits
House GOP Leaders Will Let Extended Jobless Benefits Die December 5, 2003
by Congressional Quarterly

ouse Republican leaders intend to let supplemental unemployment benefits expire Dec. 21, taking no action to renew the politically popular program when members return for a one-day session Monday. Republicans say the economy is recovering, noting today's announcement that the unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 percent in November, the lowest rate since March. "We've provided unprecedented help to unemployed workers. We thought it was important . . . but we're seeing really impressive economic growth. We're optimistic that things are moving in the right direction," Christin Tinsworth, spokeswoman for Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas, R-Calif., told Congressional Quarterly. The expiring program (PL 108-26) provides an additional 13 weeks of federal unemployment benefits after workers have exhausted their regular 26 weeks of state benefits. Democrats called the GOP's actions cold-hearted, noting that more than 80,000 workers per week will exhaust their state benefits after Dec. 21 and will not be eligible for the extra federal help.

These Repuke swine will let those unemployed, go with out extended benefits as a Christmas present. What a shame, first they take away all the work these poor families needed now they tell them to go to hell for any help. God help this country!

2. Hypocritical assholes.
IIRC, extending unemployment benefits only cost about $1 billion.

We are $500 billion in the hole already this year, thanks to idiot boy's wars and tax cuts. What's another $1 billion? The pukies keep claiming the deficit isn't a bad thing, especially during a recession.

3. Those near-sighted fools are going to see...
Some real PAYBACK on that stupid decision!

It's going to cost them FAR MORE next year than it would by simply extending benefits...

They have, unwittingly, helped to SEAL their fate next year...nothing "Chip" Rove can do to pull Dub out of this one--and it looks like the economy's not going to do its part, either!:grr:

B-)

6. Uh
Anyone who thought the rethugs were on there side better be making 200 thou per year. If you make less then that and vote for the rethugs, you are as dumb as it gets. They are screwing the unemployed, shocking. By god they did not take our guns, our job, another minor matter.

4. Bush will save the day...

Right before X-mas Rove will have a big press photo-op and Georgie will sign a 13 week extention and the house republicans will go along with it and the republicans and Bush will look like they care and saved the day...no sweat off their backs, it just adds to our deficit.

This is the usual planned republican bullshit! A set up for Bush, served up on a platter.

Election year politics...expect to see a lot more of it.

However, it could alos be used in another way...to pretend the economy is doing so well that they will spin it to the American people that an extention is not needed...and that will also may it appear that the jobless rate is down, when people extentions are exhausted, and they are not being counted any longer.

You make the call, we'll find out soon enough.

5. The damage is done
Don't expect to see that. This is motivated by pure arrogance , nothing more.

If the Dems don't make this a key point of topic, they will have once again left behind those they were suppose to lead.

9. The Repugs need the unemployed
to simply vanish off of the radar screen. Unemployed workers receiving benefits can be tracked. Once these workers get discouraged and stop looking they will "disappear" when their benefits run out. All of a sudden the employment numbers will get better and better creating the appearance of a strongly improving economy.

11. You know why, dont you?
If they don't the unemployment rate will go down, if they extend it the rates will remain the same or rise depending on what happens after the holidays, job-wise.

12. This is another "cheap labor" move, innit?
No extension of unemployment benefits will move those who are at the end of their benefits to take the first job they can find, won't it? And if that job pays a dollar less an hour than it did, say, a year ago, so much the better.

From the viewpoint of the Corporations, this sends a profitable message: No more help is coming. You'll take what you can get.

Meanwhile, Skip and Buffy at the anchor desk will gush over how the economy is roaring back.
