Let's make Dean the Time Person of the Year
While it's the editors & writers who ultimately pick 'em, they also respond to lots of letters. I suggest Dean - not just cuz I'm a supporter - but because, like him or not, he's revolutionized politics and brought a whole new Dem rebirth. I mean, let's face it, the so-called mainstream Dems (i.e., Kerry, Gep, Lieberman, & Edwards) would STILL be trying to fix on a strategy to take on Bush without REALLY doing it if it hadn't been for Dean's success at going after him with both barrels.

Look, if you want to tout your candidate, more power to ya, but as far as STORIES go, nobody can match Dean's year.

8. Well, if you can come up with another candidate
or ANY Dem who has an equally compelling STORY you outta post it. That's what the Time Person of the Year is all about - who has made the news and has the best STORY. I just thought it would be great for a DEM to get that coverage and I just can't seem to come up with anyone with a better story that interweaves populism, with the internet, with success. (I like John Edwards but somehow don't think "son of millworker" is gonna do it.) If you can come up with someone else, I'm open to suggestions.

It ain't about canonization - it's about free publicity and coverage, dammit. And it sure as shit beats having a 'pub, don't it?

USA: FCC Rule Fight Continues in Congress
Opponents of Ownership Consolidation Also Plan Legal Strategy
By Frank Ahrens
Washington Post Staff Writer
June 4, 2003

Several lawmakers and advocacy groups vowed yesterday to fight in the courts and on Capitol Hill to overturn the Federal Communications Commission's new media ownership rules, saying they give big newspapers and broadcasters too much influence over public opinion and hurt smaller media companies.

On Monday, the FCC voted 3 to 2 along party lines to relax or eliminate some ownership restrictions, such as a rule barring media companies from owning television stations in markets where they publish daily newspapers. The commission's three Republicans, led by Chairman Michael K. Powell, voted for the changes, while the two Democrats dissented.

Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) said he would file a "resolution of disapproval" to block what he called the "wrongheaded vote." Such a resolution can overturn rules set by regulatory agencies and requires a simple majority of each house of Congress to pass. In March 2001, a resolution of disapproval was used to strike down an ergonomics standard set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Even if the resolution were to pass both Republican-majority houses, it would require President Bush's signature.
Kerry, a presidential candidate and ranking member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, said Monday's rule changes favor big media companies at the expense of small ones.
>>>>>>>>
Kerry filed the Resolution in September.

The corporate press gave Dean a press plane in June.

18. well, I'm just thinking about how I felt after the 2002
election. Not the 2000 election, mind you, which, God knows, was horrible enough. But the midterm one was the one that put me in a complete depressive funk because there was no one. .. NO ONE. .. in my party in any kind of leadership position that dared to raise their head and say that the emperor had no clothes (or brains, but that's another post) If Dean is the GOP and Richard Mellon Scaife's wet dream, pray tell me where was the Dem THEN who could inspire and galvanize large groups of people? Not just talk the talk, but get OTHERS to walk the walk with them. The only one was Paul Wellstone, God bless him.

Like a lot of Dems, it was Dean's call that was different. Yes, yes, others spoke out - but their speaking out hasn't sparked. Didn't then, isn't now.

We TRIED "supporting Bush" in an effort to play their side of the fence in 2002 and all we got was a kick in the teeth (ask Max Cleland, ask Mary Landrieu, ask any of the Dems who voted for the Iraq resolution). We tried rolling over and our fear of Rove and RMS showed and didn't work. As long as spend all our time worrying about Rove and the Scaife money machine and try to second-guess how they will attack, ad nauseum, we WILL lose. The only way to defeat 'em is to show them for what they are. And, like it or not, the only one who has done that AND, more importantly, GOTTEN OTHERS TO SEE IT TOO, is Dean.

Ran a campaign based on lies and push polls?

31. That would be such a beautiful irony-
The media whores pick Dean as the Person of the Year, and once Dean is elected, he sets a new FCC to work on putting together the facts to sustain anti-conglomerization regulations and reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine and Equal Time provisions.

33. Then it wouldn't be irony
Edited on Sat Dec-06-03 02:37 AM by depakote_kid
it would just be another instance of the corporate mass media manipulating the public into voting against their interest.

But that isn't going to happen (despite your persistent negativity) because of the very reasons that Dean is being considered as Person of the Year- and because the situation in Iraq (from any credible analysis I've read) will continue to deteriorate and the economy is going to continue to shed jobs. You need to realize that while this massive deficit spending may have raised GDP (Gross Distorted Product) that money isn't circulating back into most communities, where it would have a multiplier effect on main street. Most state's fiscal crises are only going to be worse next year- because (and this is unprecedented since WWII) the Republicans won't provide much needed federal revenue sharing. In turn, local governments aren't going to get transfer payments from their states, meaning either tax hikes, increased user fees or drastic cuts in fundamental services.

That's just how the table's going to be set.

Dean is poised to win the nomination, based on his fundraising, his loyal organization and his straightforward rational talk. Clark might have had a beter chance (and I've said this many times before) had he enetered the race earlier in the year. You really couldn't expect him to put everything together in such a short time- he's done the best he could under the circumstances, and that's admirable. I think he's going to be on the ticket and that he'll be as powerful a VP as Dick Cheney is (whose power is unprecedented).

Better still- though this is the subject of another post- Dean & Clark are going to nationalize the race next year, and we'll get the House back, too. Just wait and see.

36. That would probably require an Act of Congress
Edited on Sat Dec-06-03 03:06 AM by depakote_kid
because I suspect that the federal courts (especially the D.C. Circuit en banc) would find some angle to overturn mandatory free air time. Not that the FCC couldn't promulgate such a regulation pursuant to its broad rulemaking authority. Interesting idea~ we'd have to do a little research to see just how far they could go.

I've always thought that an extension the various Fairness Doctrine rules could have been the perfect vehicle for campaign finance reform- it would have done an end run aound Buckey v. Valeo's ill considered opinion that campaign money is equivalent to free speech- I mean, let the one side spend as much money as they want broadcasting mendacious commercials, so long as the other side has an equal opportunity to respond. That would go A LONG WAY toward reforming not only partisan elctions, but also the corrupted initiative, referrendum and recall process around this country- and the major case upholding the Fairness Doctrine, the Red Lion Case was a uninimous decision and is STILL good law.

43. Right
But there are lots of models for how to run a campaign, and not all of them work. I'm not saying that it won't work, I just think it's premature to lavish honors on someone for creating a new model, without first seeing the outcome.

I see it as analogous to an algorithm - it may look good on paper, but you need to run it through a few beta tests before you can say that it works as well as you hoped. Unintended consequences and all that.
