Two Flu Shot Makers Run Out of Vaccine
DANIEL Q. HANEY
Associated Press

The two makers of flu shots in the United States said Friday they have run out of vaccine and will not be able to meet a surge in demand resulting from fears of a particularly bad flu season.

Nevertheless, the companies said people who have put off getting their shots may still be able to find them, since distributors and doctors' offices may still have some left.

The companies, Chiron and Aventis Pasteur, together made about 80 million doses of the injected vaccine, which ordinarily would be enough to take care of U.S. demand.

Yep. With a health care system like this, who needs terroists.

2. Actually the CDC tries very hard
to guess which viruses will be the upcoming ones and attempt to put those in each year's shots. The problem is, they need to figure out in March which particular strains of flu will be the ones causing disease the next fall. They usually get it right. This seems to be the first year they've gotten it wrong in a big way.

The other, in my opinion most important, thing is that the strain causing the trouble this year is an A type virus. Flu comes in three major strains, labelled (somewhat unimaginatively) A, B, and C. It was an A strain that caused the Spanish flu. I think the Hong Kong flu of 1967 was an A-type. The Asian flu of 1957-58, if memory serves correctly, was a B type.

Anyway, the A type flu viruses are the really nasty ones, with some a whole lot worse than the others.

But it also seems to me that every single year they say that this year is going to be bad for flu and try to scare everyone in to getting the shots.

3. The flu virus sems to be mutating. Getting kind of scary. Wipe off
salt and pepper shakers in cafes and use a paper towel to open the public restroom doors. Stay safe.

8. Flu viruses mutate
constantly. That's why there's a new outbreak every year. The really big problem is that Chinese farmers find it very convenient to raise pigs and ducks together (something about each eats the poop of the other) and they pass the virus back and forth, neither animal gets sick, but it mutates happily, and people do get sick.

4. Got mine, didn't want it, I would have been much happier
if somebody else would have gotten it(along with the four other shots and the blood test) instead of me.

5. Business/Media at work
Turn on the TV---every local news story I've seen, they put on a doctor who basically says, "I've got flu shots. Come one down!!!!!" It's really funny.

Folks, please do get the shot--I had the flu last year. Believe me, you do not want it no matter how much you hate the idea of giving the drug companies and docs the bucks.

6. Well that is the strange thing.
I got the flew shot for free through my emplyer's health insurance. And they told me that they planned for exccess this year becase of shortages last year.

But ABC News had it as the opposit. That they over built last year, so they shorted this year.

7. I am in day five of it right now.
Started out bad. Upset stomach, slight fever, cough, runny nose. The worst part is the muscle aches. Felt like crap until today. Things are looking up though. I have a mild cough but am feeling much better.

My husband took my daughter (17 yrs. old) to the doctors yesterday. She was having a very different experience that I did. Chills and a fever of around 101 degrees. The doctor gave her two anti-viral shots. She said she feels a hundred times better today. No fever or chills, just a cough and stuffy nose.

I did get the flu shot. My daughter didn't. I don't know if it is really worse this year. I do know it came earlier than expected and the shot for this years virus is not working for certain strains of the virus which mutated.
