Question RE: Salvation Army change donations
Is there any reason why I shouldn't contribute to the SA?

I'm pretty sure I don't agree with all their views, but if they promote charity that helps people then that's fine with me.

But I I saw my local bell ringer the other day, and before going do donate I suddenly thought I wanted to get more information first..

1. if hungry people don't pray, they don't get to eat.
they're also extremely homophobic. google them and learn for yourself.

5. Get two or three friends together, call any local church
and get the name of a needy family.. Adopt them.. Make it personal.. My group does this, and we take it a step further.. We help them all year..

school supplies for the kids
take kids shopping for mother's day (most are single moms)
shoes/coats/backpacks for kids
a couple of people in our group volunteer car repairs if she has a car..
a box of staple foods/soaps/paper products every month..
birthday cake for kids..

When you help one on one, it helps more..and it can be a catalyst to show that mom that someone really thinks she matters.. Lots of these moms are overwhelmed, depressed and hopeless..

2. For the first time,
I'm not dropping money in the Salvation Army bucket. Their homophobia is horrible. I'm sending more to local food banks.

4. This will be the second year that I don't drop money in their buckets
My reasons are the same as others have mentioned.

Instead, consider a food donation to the local food bank. Our local food bank (in a huge, metro area) claims to be low on almost everything.

It'd be a good way to make an impact on someone's life.

6. And all of the good responses you
received have been true for at least 70 years.

I remember hearing grampa's stories about men lined up for hours and hours, just starving, and not allowed to eat until they had to listen to a Salvationist sermon.

8. There are other charities.
Skip the SA. They tried to cut a deal with the Bush Maladministration to side-step state laws against job discrimination.

I read it in a conservative Chicago paper and all over the Seattle papers. Two years ago.

Do you BEELEEEVE! Google it. Amen.

9. They promised 100k/month in lobbying to Bush in 2001.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A37723-2001Jul9¬Found=true

The backroom deal was this: Bush allows them to get on the government dole without having to stop discriminating against gay people, and in return they'd spend about 88,000-110,000 a month to help lobby for the bill.

They do a great amount of good for people. But they are, in fact, in the pocket of the administration, and it's not at all unlikely that in the future that money you give will go towards helping Bush's aims for social services.

11. They're hypocritical two-faced bastards; they claim to help but they don't
They'll only help who they want.

They won't hire people who they think are homosexual.

They sure as hell won't help perceived homosexuals as well. I know a guy who was turned away by these "salvation" folk.

I saw a SA van the other day and glared at the people within, ultimately mouthing "hypocrite bastards".

If they're a humanitarian charity, they better help ALL of humanity, or else they can sit on their middle finger, spin on it for a while, remove their finger, and then even go so far as to lick it for all I care. x(

Damn right I'm angry. Any progressive/liberal/DFL'er should be nothing less than outraged at these creeps because of their hypocrisy. I suppose it's okay to dislike homosexuality, but that doesn't mean it's okay to discriminate against them or folks perceived as being them.
