If truthout started an email service, would you use it?
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 12:30 PM by WilliamPitt
We are developing a software platform much like Hotmail so our readers can be, for example, 'Tom.Brady@truthout.org.' It will be free upon signup, I am almost completely sure, and will have web access from anywhere so you can always get your mail (again, like Hotmail, but without the corporate whorishness). It will also have all the features like spam blocking, etc.

So, if we rolled this out, would you become an '@truthout.org' person?

What are the long term plans for this service? As much as I would prefer Truthout to yahoo or hotmail, there is a good probability that they will be there in the future. At what cost we don't know but a free Truthout service would affford a much "cleaner" alternative.

I would make it my homepage, too, if you wanted to do something like that because I hate all the ad crap on other sites.

I quit using Lycos, for instance, when, everytime I opened my homepage I had to look at the playing cards the repukes had made of liberals.

And then you could offer web site hosting and pix hosting and I'd publish all my porno pix of other DUers, and..

okay, if I HAD THEM I could.

and you could have an ftp site where people could store info accessible to all truth-outers with links to issues researched, with links attached, and sorted by category..

okay, that's more than email, but I would like the email, too.

29. yes if it was free
My main email provider is shutting down on the 15th. I only use free email services because I'm low income but I would love something better than yahoo, which is sooooo slllllowwwwww.

Mainly I'm looking for --
--from time to time I need to be able to send large attachments and less frequently I need to receive them from people on my mailing list
-- i would prefer not to get any attachments from people not in my contacts list
-- for the love of pete, no pop-ups, i realize you must pay for the site but please, banner ads only
-- either an easy way to bounce back messages when I go on vacation or a large amount of space before the box is filled up
-- spam blocking
-- most important is to be able to access it from anywhere in the world instead of just from my own computer

I'll probably use your site even if it doesn't comply all of these -- my past service had pop-ups -- looking forward to giving it a try.

It would certainly be a hell of a lot more dignified to be "@truthout.org" than "@yahoo.com." Do these folks realize that the word yahoo doesn't have very pleasant connotations???

31. No. Not as long as truthout.org is used to spread distortions Will.
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 06:18 PM by Myra
Hey, you're one of the greatest guys in the world and I have
infinite respect for you and your kindness and your writing talent,
and complete trust of your intentions. I'm also very grateful for the
constant work you do to help fight the fascists in the BFEE.
(I'm not trying to make this personal, just want to make clear that
I hold you in high regard.)

But within the past few days I've seen the, IMO totally bogus,
FAIR "Media Advisory" about Clark posted on the truthout site.
This "Advisory" was full of distortions of General Clark's words.
It was almost as bad as the infamous trashy Nation piece.
So if "truth"out is used to spread such smears,
I wouldn't want to be associated with it.

If you posted genuine criticism of Clark, or legit questions
(and there are plenty of each), I'd have no problem.
I have questions about him that I'd like answered,
just as I have questions about Dean that I'd like answered.
But I don't appreciate the perpetuation of distortions.

Then I'd like to issue it asap.

Oh, and I should add Will, after the primaries when we have a
Dem candidate, I'd be proud to use the truthout email address.

65. Well, either it's gone or I'm a poor gumshoe and can't find it on Truthout
And as surprised as I was to see the FAIR smear reproduced on Truthout, it is your site and your choice what to post.
(Tho' I of course wrote to "the editor" to complain.)

It is kinda weird though to use Truthout to post negative things about a candidate many of us here support, then ask us if we want to promote Truthout with email. Do I want to help trash my candidate? No.

from what I read here there are many who do need/want it. plus, it's impossible to know what situations my future will bring that would make a truthout e-mail address a handy/useful/necessary thing. may I suggest you include a "view headers" feature--I had to cajole one of my ISPs to do so after receiving a freeper attack that I wanted to trace.

Long ago, I signed up with yahoo when it was still free to forward to your pop mail. Right after I changed everyone over to my yahoo addy, they started charging for pop forwarding.

I don't know how that affects the cost to run the service or anything, but if it is possible to do that, I would surely use it.
