1. Woo hoo!
I'm sorry: I'm looking at the SF from afar with only one goal in mind--beating Bush. The Democratic party does not need any more division or defection before Bush is booted.

I wish Newsom was better, but we can't hope for anything that gives Nader any hope, that makes Nader look anything but instantly ridiculous.

11. Greens Lose San Fransico: Blame Liberal Bias
I'm sorry, the story is that the Greens can't win a non-partisan seat in San Fran-fooking-Cisco. Where to go from here? Nowhere.

If Dean is the nominee, one pleasant side effect would be the absorption of the Greenie diehards into the Democratic activist corps. Whatever desplinters the left is good by me.

20. thanks for your "fair and balanced" analysis
Considering the enmity for the Greens, they do pretty well to get Pelosi, Feinstein, Gore, AND Clinton out to support him.

This was big for the Greenies :-)

24. I retract my opinion
Learned a little more about Newsom. On balance I think it's good that Newsom won, sicne I do not want the left divided between two parties.

But Newsom himself is totally worthless, and there's no joy to be had in his victory.

which is even worse... I fear the Left in California will feel even more alienated from the Democratic Party and vote accordingly in the future. People here are seething about Clinton/Gore coming to stump for Newsom.

So we've kept San Francisco but at what price?

For years Dems have told the Green, focus on local races, build your way up and blah, blah (you see it here every day). The minute a Green victory, at local level, is within reach- what happens? Here come the big guns, endorsing a vile, vile man over the people, over the homeless.

The message was clear and battle-lines are now being drawn. My phone has been ringing non-stop from angry SF-ers who are LIVID with the Dem Party, thier own Party now- feeling totally betrayed. I think this was one of the dumbest things the Democratic Party could have done.

17. Newsome
is one of those "old Democrats up here that have been acting like Republicans all along." He's a businessman; "Democrat" is simply his sales pitch. Truth in advertising laws do not apply.

26. Yep
And Matt will give it another go next time around if Gavin is elected. And he could win next time if Gavin doesn't come up with thte goods he promised the voters.

Other bonus will be that IRV will be in place by then. So the city can save itself some big bucks by not having to hold a second election again.
