Boston Globe gives Kucinich the nod for the debate

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

DENNIS KUCINICH got off the best line of the debate last night. Asked by Ted Koppel about Al Gore's endorsement of front-runner Howard Dean, Kucinich deadpanned: "I can't say I was really counting on it."

Kucinich also got the most applause of any candidate last night. To Koppel's query about when the candidates who are low on money and low in the polls would drop out, Kucinich shot back: "You see where the media takes these campaigns?" First they make us talk about endorsements, then they ask about polls, then about money. "When do we talk about issues?"

But when the candidates did talk about the issues, what did we learn? That John Edwards manages to work the words "special interests" and "powerful lobbies" into the answer of every question he's asked? That Wesley Clark was a far more impressive candidate for president before he ever got into the race? That John Kerry can string together pejoratives in denouncing President Bush's foreign policy -- "arrogant, inept, reckless, ideological" -- without ever explaining coherently why he voted for that president's war in Iraq? None of that came as a surprise.

In fact, the only surprise in last night's debate was that Dean showed up with his sleeves unrolled and his suit coat on. Perhaps that was a sign that Dean already sees himself as the Democrats' nominee-apparent and is gradually beginning to reach out to voters beyond the angry left wing of the Democratic Party. Certainly he showed little of the fire-and-brimstone style that has made him such a hero to the MoveOn.org crowd; for the first 80 minutes of the 90-minute debate, in fact, he acted as if mixing it up with the others was the last thing he wanted to do.

....

2. They called it right...
I'm decidedly not a Kucinich supporter, but I thought he ran away with the debate.

4. Kucinich wins the debate, gets 1 1/4 paragraphs.
Dean merely shows up, and gets two, both of which add to the 'inevitability' message. The rest of the candidates get slammed. That's some coverage.

11. yeah
but at least the Boston Globe mentions Kucinich's performance and notes the applause he received. The NYT doesn't even mention Dennis!

12. very good point
The NYT quoted him ONCE over the endorsements, didn't even give him a paragraph in the main story. They don't give Clark's domestic policy any coverage either. The corporate media is so shameless and transparent I'm surprised people believe it at all.

7. I agree, he did win the debate! I am glad he is getting some good press!
While I am a Dean supporter first, I very much like Kucinich and wish that the idiots in the US could recognise what a great candidate and human being he is. I think that it shows what a sorry state our country is in when someone talks about Peace and free education and people automatically count him out. He is a good man and should get more respect than he has been given.

Good for you, Kucinich supporters, I'm glad your man is getting noticed, he deserves it.

6. Could Dean Talk Any FASTER...Mumble any MORE
and they called Nixon the Used Car Dealer!? I thought that DK Really nailed Dean on the "if you can't make the CONNECTION to Iraq ($138B)and it's Occupation and Everything else..." Rejoinder to HD's "whine" at the end about nuttin'-but-Iraq night.

Well we know Doc you ain't dealing from strength when it comes to foreign policy...Jed Bartlett you ain't.

As for Kerry? I think he's walking up to the Mea Culpa on the War a la' Pitts recollection.

Overall: It was a lot of FUN to watch. Beat the Shit Out of Regular Broadcasting:grouphug:

23. That was vintage Dennis.
If you've heard him speak in other places, that's him. I think he's relaxing and getting a better handle on the format of these debates, so we got to see Dennis being Dennis. An amazing man.

16. "Dean showed up with his sleeves unrolled and his suit coat on"
Is this different than he has done at the other debates? If it is it shows his bait and switch is kicking into switch mode already.

17. Thank you, Boston Globe
Kucinich really handled Koppel's attempt to trivialize the debate.

The others should be following his lead.

20. they will support it until they get the nomination
Then they will see how it works - that's a problem for us, no matter who wins.

22. Yeah, the media doesn't seem to like...
... candidates who are not for the chopping up & selling of America to the corporations that own them. Why we rely on these "people" (and I use the term loosely) to determine who will represent our interests is beyond me.

26. You raise an important point.
Dennis is consistently acting to help people. Including his fellow candidates. Taking on the media. Taking on Diebold; that helps the democratic process and all candidates. He is not just helping himself.

We do, indeed, badly need a man like Dennis.
