Poll question: Drek Hits Fan; or Long Slow Descent Into Suckage?
Do you believe that the coming years are going to be characterized by the intense, frightening violence of martial law, perhaps brought on by "terrorist attacks" and epidemics, perhaps also leading to revolutions and rioting? Or do you believe we are going to face a long, slow descent into suckage as freedoms are eroded and the economy crumbles?

Please explain why you've come to your conclusion.

1. I voted drek and fan
although I don't think it will come 'all at once' or perhaps even in quick succession. But I think that eventually, unless we can remove not only * but the entire infection known as the Straussian NeoCons, that there will be a 'flashpoint' which will end in martial law.

Even General Franks said pretty much the same thing. Yah, its true that Wingnut militia groups have been saying the same thing for more than a few years, but while they thought it would be the UN or some such nonsense, we weren't completely under the controlling influence of a government and press all dominated by warmongers. Quite the opposite in many ways, at the time, really.

2. I think I'm more prepared
...for drek/fan impact. I've always had this sense that It, whatever It was, would happen in my lifetime, and so I've been almost obsessively getting ready for It.

Lately I'm starting to get worried what I'll do if, instead of big things going on, it's just a constant whittling away of everything worth saving.

4. I'm more hopeful...
...that both can be avoided. And that starts with fighting like hell next year!

However, if one of the two is inevitable, I would select the lohg, slow descent -- only because that was the pattern during the Reagan/Bush I years. There was no dramatic collapse or crackdown that might have stirred up opposition, merely a "slow-motion depression" that no one really paid all that much attention to until they were already nearly at the bottom.

5. we are at the beginning of corporatism
and it's slow take over. average citizens haven't felt the blows enough that the oligarchs are going to deliver.
this country hasn't finished yet with more and more power, money, dailey influence in our lives flowing to the corporation.
this democracy, republic{representative government} is evolving away from the people with the peoples consent and what that future looks like -- i don't really know.
i'm not an advocate of direct democracy as a paliative{sp?} to this dilema. i think things could get violent -- especially as china becomes an increasingly potent player on the global stage and the e.u. exerts a greater independant spirit.
it's gonna be interesting.

6. Drek --> Fan, IMO
Whoever is controlling bu$h (and that means whoever is controlling Poppy) has seen something that indicates the time for the long slow descent is over.

The Regime is proceeding with everything it does as if there is no tomorrow. There is a seeming desperation to get as much wealth as possible into as few hands as possible and damn the consequences.

I suspect the driving force in all this is Peak Oil. The BFEE simply must get the oil market cornered before something happens. What that something is remains a mystery to me, but it must be HUGE for bu$hco to be forced to abandon the Long Slow Descent (aka LSD) strategy that has served them so well.

If BFEE can accomplish their nasty mission by the summer of 2004, they don't give Shit One if Little George goes down in flames. He's been expendable (in every sense of the word) right from the start. But if BFEE is still behind schedule come September, they will manufacture some terrifying, galvanizing event that will drive frightened voters into staying the course.

12. dbt, interesting. Agree that this mad rush to get "everything" done has
been surprising, and that so many of our Democrats in Congress have been willing to go along. What really is behind that mad rush? That's a question we should explore more here on DU. There was an interesting discussion here last week about "Peak Oil." It could be that, or it could be that and something else.

The "Mad Rush" to completely turn back the New Deal is also one of their goals. They've been trying to do it since Reagan. Clinton unfortunately interrupted part of their plan, but they are driving us down the track to total destruction of our Economy and Lifestyle with their worship of the Corporation and Cronyism.

7. Other ...
when bush goes, the darkness goes ... i'm not as pessimistic as your poll questions ...

and speaking about drek hitting the fan, i have always enjoyed the following expression:

"Remember, that which hits the fan is not always evenly distributed ..."

11. It'll swing back,
Whether we go real far down beforehand or not, who knows? The only certain things are: this country will come to an end, and so will its various episodes. Bad luck to be born into a less than wonderful episode, eh?
