What Gray Davis needs to do is...
Edited on Sun Jul-27-03 12:46 AM by Tony_FLADEM
instead of making the election about him or his opponents, he needs to make the election about the people of California. He needs to focus on the fact that he won the election in 2002 and the attempt to throw him out of office is a slap in the face the voters of the state.

He also needs to focus on the state by pointing out that a new governor would take months to establish a new administration and by the time everything was settled it would be election season all over again.

Davis needs to point out the hypocrisy of the Republicans. Bush turned a 200 billion surplus into a 500 billion deficit and this does not matter to most conservatives.

Finally, he needs to focus on the experience he has. This is what helped him win in 1998 in a land slide election. The budget deal that will be signed Sunday will be helpful.

Tony

it is now time to fight , the die is cast , the Rubicon has been crossed. 2. He should run this ad
Edited on Sun Jul-27-03 01:25 AM by dsc
Very deep male voice in a dark serious tone.

There are places where elections don't matter. Where the idle rich can use their money and influence to overturn the will of the people. Where executives have to weigh the thought that they could trigger a coup with the wrong action. Those places are called Banana Republics and dictatorships. Many Californians risked their lives to escape from those kinds of places. Now a craven, desperate political party wants to bring that here. To our state. Tell them you want no part of it. Banana Republic is a great store but no place to live. Vote no on the recall and keep democracy alive.

On edit If a TV ad use pictures of the standard Banana Republic from some movie, if radio play scary music at the beginning to get people attention.

3. LOL! With a tiny bit of toning down that is genius
Because it's true.

To answer the topic, I had interesting client tonight that told me he had voted for Bill Simon in the last election and would vote for him now. I said although I respected that he wanted Simon in the general election that to do so now would send the message to any millionaire that wants to overturn California's voters' wishes that they only need to purchase a recall whenevere they pleased.

I said it was poor public policy.

He said "but we have to get rid of Davis.'"

I said we can get rid of Davis in three years - in the meantime, Davis has gotten the message that California wants effective action in reducing the deficit.

he said,"but jeez, 38 million."

I said,"but increasing burdens are shifting to the states due to federal tax cuts for the wealthiest, the energy crisis was handled poorly and encouraged dishonesty at the federal level, and that 38 billion dollars was why it was poor reasoning for the Repubs that held out on the budget should have approved some tax revenue to reduce the deficit. To take such a hard line when serious cuts are already being made is sheer stupidity."

I also asked him if he would want GrayDavis to win the a very small portion of the vote rather than the majority of voters.

He said no.

I said the I request you not set the precedent. It could happen to you.

He said he got my point.

5. I am deadly serious
We need to call things what they are. These people are power mad hypocrits and need to be treated as such. Here is another ad I would run.

Year 2015

Little middle school kid trying to memorize governor's names for a quiz. We are looking over his shoulder and see this huge list of names. Jones 2003-2003, Smith 2003-2003, Roe 203-2004, and on and on. Kid just puts his head down in frustration "why do we have so many governors?"

Voice California has elected its 50th governor since the recall of Gray Davis. The petitions for his recall are being certified as we speak. That election will be scheduled for 12 weeks from today.

2nd voice Is this what we want for California? To have a goverment which changes with the seasons. Just what kind of governance will we have if we start recalling them at will. Democracy matters. Show up and vote no. Or you may never see a real Governor again.

6. Except for one point
The ambiguities with the law have been pointed out in the press. After this ordeal is over, I suspect there will be clean-up legislation regardless of the outcome. Remember after the relentless attacks on Clinton, the Independent Counsel clause was allowed to sunset.

9. Good reasoning NSMA.
I wish we all could walk these GOP voters through points of logic with excellent information at our fingertips like you do.

7. Hey Tony
That's good political stuff there. And the rest of the posts are good also.

Tell ya what worries me. The election will be stolen.

Yep, if somebody doesn't get on the stick and ensure the votes are counted properly, this recall will be stolen by Diebold computer programers.

11. Eliminate the recall...
Last November the people of California RE-ELECTED Davis to a second term as governor. I believe that Unless he has committed a criminal act which would qualify for impeachment then the people of California are stuck with him until January 2007!

13. What do you think of Audie Bock running as a Dem?
She was elected to the CA Assembly from Oakland as a Green and
then switched to the Dem party mid-term...dumped her supporters.

Now running on the ballot opposing Gray.

14. audie bock doesn't really count
she has earned a reputation as a flake , and most Californiana have never heard of her. What worries me is the 50% or so of well meaning Dems who want to run DiFi or some other popular Dem as an alternative to the puke candidates, as insurance against an all puke slate winning.I worry that just enough of theis popular Dems supporters will vote to recall ( and aid the puke agenda), but not enough to win the election. Their concerns are valid, and I am beginning to waver in my Davis or Death position.but being there is no primary, who will the Party chose? who will be unhappy? To be fair , if that were to happen, I would settle for none other than Cruz Bustamante.
