Six children were crushed to death by a collapsing wall during an assault by U.S. forces on a compound stuffed with weapons in eastern Afghanistan (news - web sites), an American military spokesman said Wednesday, the second time in a week that civilians have died in action against Taliban and al-Qaida suspects.

Like I said, there's always a fresh catastrophe to put the memory of the last one right out of your mind.

I realized going over it that I made a mistake with the dating: the report on Sunday morning was about something that happened Saturday, which means that the deaths really happened on December 6, not December 7. Typical American fuckup, assuming that something happens when I heard about it and not when it actually took place.

The deaths we heard about this morning are also retroactive; they took place on Friday the 5th, apparently.

I usually write the column Monday (latest I can do it is Tuesday morning) and with events the way they are the thing is often outdated before it's even up. But unfortunately, at the time that I wrote it, it was even more topical than I knew.

The Plaid Adder

that there is an international Light a Candle event, to take place at 7pm local time on Dec. 14th. The idea is to light a candle for all the children that have died this year. I'm sure it started for children who died of disease, but I feel that adding my light in remembrance of the innocent lives lost to Bush's madness will be highly appropriate.
