ALERT (10:15 ET) C-Span 2: Manufacturing Job Market: AFL-CIO talking now
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 10:17 AM by LittleApple81
Very interesting statistics. Arguing against statements made by somebody for the Economic Growth Institute (I might be incorrect with the name) but it is a pro-business Bushist institute.

Corrected: C-Span2

3. The right-winger basically said that if we try to keep manufacturing
jobs we are Ludites.
That we should just go into "the financial industry" which pays more!!!!!
That the market crash in 1929 was caused by protectionism.

5. He said all the jobs that the right-winger mentioned as the ones
being important in the 21st century are digitized and therefore exportable. They are the ones leaving the US now.

6. Protectionism: Wide open markets and free trade? Just to
discount discussion. Free trade needs to be applied with a set of other rules. It is not be used as a bad word. Protection of jobs should be considered as important as protecting the environment.

9. Robert Atkinson from the "Progressive Policy Institute"
Saying government shouldn't have a big role in handling of the economy.
Low skilled jobs are going to be lost and they should... (my question: well, what are going to do with the poor people that are not ready for these changes? Compassionate conservatism????)

About CFG:

* Main agenda is promoting tax cuts and drastically reducing the size of the federal government.

* CFG patterns itself after EMILY's List, a progressive group that raises campaign funds for pro-choice women. CFG encourages donors to mail in checks for favored candidates. By “bundling” these checks and sending them off to candidates, CFG can have a large impact on individual races while avoiding the rules that govern more traditional political action committees.

* CFG has more than 9,000 members, dominated by Wall Street financiers and executives.

* CFG’s president and founder Steve Moore has called for closing several government departments, including Education, Commerce, Labor and Agriculture. As always, CFG isn't afraid to take on Republicans who disagree with its policy goals.

* CFG’s latest target is Sen. John McCain, an opponent of some of President Bush's latest tax cut proposals. According to Moore, CFG members “loathe” McCain and hope to find “a true, Reagan conservative” to face him in the 2004 primary.
