Dean On Campaign Finance Reform
Dean Comments On Supreme Court Campaign Finance Reform Decision
MANCHESTER--Governor Dean made the following statement today on the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the McCain-Feingold law:

"McCain-Feingold is a very important first step toward the sweeping campaign finance reform this country really needs, and I’m glad the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of this law," he said.

"Much work, though, remains to be done. Even with this law in place, George W. Bush is able to raise $200 million from corporate special interests--and in return, giving those 'Rangers' and 'Pioneers' unprecedented access and government giveaways in return for their support. We have a long way to go to change the toxic political culture in Washington."

"Our campaign is campaign finance reform. We’ve collected hundreds of thousands of small contributions from ordinary Americans all across the country. Those ordinary Americans own this campaign and they are the ones who will call the shots in a Dean administration."

2. When some speech is more free than others...
... democracy doesn't work. That's what the pursuit of ridding our system of monied interests is all about. We may not be able to purify our system, but the pursuit is what is important.

I'm glad the Supreme Court (this time) made the right decision. McCain-Feingold may be largely ineffective, but it's a great first step.

4. True
And it shows that an effort is being made to address the issue. We have a long way to go.

5. and I'm glad they changed a law so that 16 year olds can donate money
to the campaigns. That will really help with political activism in youth.

8. Very true
And Russ Feingold himself is a proponent of full public financing. Getting the money out of it completely.

7. So where's the proposal?
Edwards says: "free TV time and public financing of campaigns." That's a policy proposal.
