Many Indians Exempt From State Taxes, Fees

California tribes' sovereignty frustrates beleaguered state and local officials seeking to fill yawning budget gaps.

By Dan Morain
Times Staff Writer

July 25, 2003

SACRAMENTO — Deron Marquez, 33, drives a Mercedes coupe valued at more than $96,000 and oversees a high-profit business that generates tens of millions of dollars a year.

State and local authorities collect no tax on the business' profits or property, and for one of the two years he has owned his Mercedes-Benz, Marquez paid no vehicle license fee, state records show. By law, Marquez, like many Native Americans, didn't have to do so.

As chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, he is one of roughly 26,000 Native Americans enrolled in the 53 California tribes that own casinos. Although some have grown wealthy on gambling profits, they need not pay many taxes shouldered by other Californians.

1. I say....GOOD FOR THEM....
As much as we need their tax revenue, this whole country belonged to their ancestors, and our greedy govt stole it from them and did it via genocide..

The Yavapai here in AZ are doing the same thing and are preserving their culture since much of the casino profits go to rez schools.

4. we are running the first Indian for assembly
from Coachella Valley(Palm Springs). Maryanne Andreas from the Morongo band You know they own that BIG casino on I10 near Banning. She will run against Puke Bonnie Garcia for the 80th AD a large majority dem dist that includes this area, Imperial county to the AZ border. If she wins she will be a first. She has an opportunity now to deal with the labor dispute at the Agua Caliente and Spa casinos that are trying to stop an attempt by the union to organize. the lcal Dems seem unwilling to put her on the spot. I , however , am willing.

7. What do you think of her?

8. They should be put on the spot
Their treatment of injured workers is an abomination. If a law is broken in a casino, the Indian police are more than happy to turn the matter over to the Riverside DA, but in matters concerning labor, the Indians suck. In the last two years we have literally come to blows over this in Sacramento with the Indians...which then has them play repukes against Dems.

5. No, no. It's "Indians Getting Back AT California."
It seems fair. Even evil and ironic, which would bring the smallest measure of justice.

I don't ever beat my breast with guilt for the ancestral evils, but I can appreciate this.

6. It is ironic.
I guess an Indian buying a governorship wouldn't be that
unheard of either...
