Freepers question my patriotism!
Again.

It's Sunday, and by long tradition, I took the kids (all 3) to McDonalds for lunch. It gives my wife a break, and the kids love the jungle gym monstrosity.

So, we're leaving and I'm packing the kids in the car when Joe Freeper pulls up (coming too close to my 10 year old daughter) in his Jeep wannabe, sneers at me and says "Where's your flag? Aren't you a patriot?"

So I look at the remnants of a flag flying from his radio antenna, and tell him "I have too much respect for my countries flag to destroy one on my car."

And of course, he takes offense. But by now, the kiddies are in the car and I'm feeling froggie.

So I tell him "Come here, let me show you my patriotism".

I point at the small sticker on the lower left corner of my windshield.

"That's my base sticker" I tell him, "I have to have it to report to the warship I'm stationed on. I spent 7 months of my life this past year wasting my time looking for weapons that don't exist. I've spent 19 years in service of my country, and I don't need you or anyone else questioning my patriotism."

He started to apologize, but I cut him off.

"You want to be a patriot? Get yourself informed. Turn off Rush, turn off Faux news, and find out for yourself what's going on in the world. And once you learn the truth, you can help me vote Bush out of office."

And I drove off.

(I shouldn't do things like that, I'm not built for fighting hand to hand, but I HATE people who question my patriotism, especially about a cheap flag on the radio antenna...this isn't the first time this has happened)

Hang a copy of the first page of US Constitution on your radio antenna or maybe the Bill of Rights. It's pretty nasty that freepers wave the flag and, at the same time, wipe their asses with the US Constitution.

Kudos for risking a headache and vomiting by dealing with that nincompoop.

It also strikes me that if you have 19 years in the military, you're close to what used to be the promise of free medical care for life after 20 years, except that Bush reneged on it in favor of co-pays. If you can help me understand the issue, I'd appreciate it.

22. Simple
The Repukes have been trying to take away retired health care 'to save money' since the 1980's. They finally suceeded in shifting it to a privately owned HMO system that will be able to line thier pockets at our expense while providing less care than before (and cost the government more money, and cost the retirees money, and generally screwing everybody but the HMO and the Repukes).

The HH was underpowered, has a hell of a slow acceleration, can't turn worth scheiss, and on a one-on-one with a ME109, put your money on the 109. Which makes it's record in the BoB even more remarkable.

Having said that..........

62. More to it than what you mentioned...
Being near thier home bases (bf-109's had to fly back over the English Channel to get back to thier bases, and had to watch thier fuel), support by radar and ground controlers, very good signal intellegence (enigma), meant that even though the Hurri was a inferior plane, it was more often than not in a supiorior position.

That, and most of the Hurri's targets were slow and clumsy bombers (He-111, Do-17, Ju-87 and 88), not fighters like the bf-109 and Me-110.

Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 01:01 AM by maine_raptor
So far the best flight sim (for modeling the Hurrie's FM) is IL2 Forgotten Battles.

Your spot on re:the best target types. I fly a Hurrie on IL2. If you run into an escorted group of bombers, it's one (maybe two passes) and you're out'ta there. Unescorted Heinkels are meat on the table, and 88's the dessert! ;evilgrin:

edited to add the following

sgr2:

The www.online thingy doesn't work for me. Why pay the cost when you can use the built-in multiplay included with a lot of the newer flight sims or use something like Kali with the older ones (EAW for example)?

73. WWIIOL is combined arms
it has alot more to offer than a pure flight sim. I played IL2 and now play alot of FB (I'll wait for the patch before going online) but WWIIOL still has the extra kick of squad play using combined arms. I was in one of the best German squads and flew the Ju-87. when there's 40-60 people in the squad divided up between infantry, tanks, and air the game is immense.

Had to quit because of financial reasons though.

I'm so glad you told him to turn off Rush and Fux news, too. I bet he'll think twice and think about what you said the next time he does, and who knows, you might just have made a difference.

I was listening to c-span for a while either yesterday morning or today when I heard more than one veteran trashing Bush as a deserter and Cheney for his six deferments...one was livid that Cheney was at the Korean War memorial.

That man had lost his brother in Korea.

I cannot believe that this administration has the support of people other than the ditto heads and the rapture wing of the repukes.

I've heard WWII vets talk about how much Bush reminds them of Hitler, even. It's amazing, really, that they get away with as much as they do.

I wish the vets would start a campaign to ask the media to tell the truth. I think that would have real impact on anyone left with a conscience.

Never was, never will be.

It is hilarious the the right, former champions of individualism and mistrust of government relentlessly laud and even worship the state and call into question anyone who is less than fervent in their fealty to the state and its leader.. So it goes.

Tell him this. America was never about being a great and powerful nation having great and powerful leaders. America and the democratic ideal were and are in direct oppositon to these ideas. Above all it was never about abject loyalty to the state.

#1. Thanks for serving our country as a member of the United States Navy. Seven month cruise into a combat zone is not for the faint of heart. That's why so many of the biggest "patriots" watch from shore, behind the lines, or from their Secret Underground Redoubt.

#2. Thanks for stating the truth to the patriot poser. The heck with him and all slime mold who "wrap themselves in the flag and burn the Constitution."

#3. Thanks for caring about your kids. People who drive fast or too close to little ones have no clue. Those who do have kids and care about others ALWAYS take time to watch out for them. And gee. That brings us back to #1 and #2.

49. Damn!
You guys down in San Diego get ALL the fun. ;)

I'm in San Francisco so I could drive around with the Darwin fish, an "Impeach Bush" sticker, a rainbow flag, and a "Bite me Issa!" sign and I'd never get so much as a sideways glance. It's just too damn easy up here.

Nicely done, Hawker, you showed us all how it should be handled.

Maybe someday I'll get the chance to use your example.

:)

Glad to hear you're doing something as wonderfully mundane as going to McDonalds -- helluva lot better than reading reports from an unknown location sea location.

65. The mundane things are the best, I think.
In the mid 1980's, the worlds busiest McDonalds were on Navy bases, within walking distance of the piers.
They got beat out by the one in Moscow, but just barely.

80. I don't want to be the asshole here...
...but to some degree, he was right. Even if you pledge to be in the army till you retire and take no money except for a meager retirement fund, that doesn't make you patriotic. To be a true patriot, you must stop thinking and let the leader of the country do your thinking for you. To be a true patriot, you must be ready to burn your children alive if the president - be it Bush, Clinton, Dean, Buchanan, or McReynolds - or his chain of command orders you to do so. To be a true patriot, you must be willing to say, to believe, to think that 2+2=5 if that's national ideology. To be a true patriot, you must abandon yourself, your individuality, completely - and become no more than a robot, a slave, a cannon fodder to the country. That's what true patriotism is: submission and robotic obedience.

Truth is unpatriotic. Reason is unpatriotic. Individuality is unpatriotic.

And yes, I'm aware that by this definition, only the president himself is a patriot. Still, some people are closer to meeting this hopeless standard, whereras others are smart enough to get away from it as much as reasonably possible.

84. I respectfully disagree
I love my country, and I want it to be the best on earth, which means I'm willing to question my leaders and work to make this a better country.

What you are describing is more of a mindless chauvenistic nationalism.

Of course, we are argueing semantics.

92. Bring back the draft!
I spent my three years (could do more if needed), but bring back the draft with the stipulation the order of selection starts with teenagers with parents with the largest amount of wealth be the ones required to serve first. Plus make sure there are very few exceptions accepted. I would like to see how many wars got started after that law was in place.

105. You mean this
http://www.fas.org/man/smedley.htm

Smedley Butler on Interventionism
-- Excerpt from a speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses.

I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag.

I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket.

There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism
(snip)

Your instincts are excellent -- you were able to get your point across without escalating the incident.

And I agree with your above post -- nothing wrong with patriotism, and loving your country.

But *nationalism* -- that's an ugly horse of a very different color. With blind nationalism, "Where's your flag" quickly morphs into "Where are your identity papers?"

Well done! :toast:
