Anybody see ABC's piece on Dean?? GOP should take notes...
Edited on Sat Dec-13-03 08:43 PM by Gloria
I tuned in to the middle of it. Jake Tapper was the reporter...yes, that Jake Tapper. I didn't realize he was now working for ABC. (that's how long it's been since I've watched any of the news on TV!!)

Anyway, there was a clip of Stephanopolous asking about NAFTA, and Dean sighing about the question, and then comes the clip from 1995 with Dean saying he's a strong supporter of NAFTA. They show Dean on a line shaking hands, and over it, they say that Dean's worst enemy can be Dean.

I'm not sure if it was on ABC or FAUX (which my mother watches....ugh!) and they're talking about Dean's comments on the Diane Rehm show and they play the audio, complete with the transcript on the screen" about 911 and Bush being warned about Saudia Arabia. Then they cut to Saxby Chamblis (R-Scumbag) and he's blabbering about "good judgment in a leader" etc. etc.

So, there it is. Hearing the arguments on this board is a lot different than seeing the presentation on TV. John Q. Public ....what are they to make of all this????? ....and these are just the news stories, not the pundits and the GOP commercials.....

3. Yes, well they dragged it out again and juxtaposed it against
Dean in 1995.

4. I hope to god Gephardt's record gets dragged out…
he opposed all kinds of stuff – like abortion – when he first started serving in the house.

6. That's the bottom line: Dean's rhetoric doesn't match his record.
That will be the storyline. They knew this stuff months ago, but they waited till it looked like he would be the nominee before they pounded him with it. Just in time to make the Dem party suffer for getting behind him.

8. bingo!
Just in time to make the Dem party suffer for getting behind him.

They are trying to drag us down into their messianic cesspool of steamy Dean desire. :-)

I think it's time, as the unofficial motto of GD says, to take the gloves off!

15. But Dean was annointed by ABC's Koppel so recently.
When he turned the Dem debate into a 90 minute Dean infomercial and
pressured Kucinich and Sharpton and Braun to drop out.
And then ABC pulled their reporters from those campaigns, before
anyone voted, based on supposed poll number and supposed money raised.
Why would ABC turn on Dean now?

18. Because they think he appears to be the nominee
and now they can make bigger fools of the whole Dem party that chose such a deceptive candidate.

16. The Democrats
can always pull out the clips of Bush saying he doesn't believe in nation building, he thinks the Middle East should take care of it's own problems, he doesn't think the US should impose it's will on other countries, etc.

19. Deja Vu Rush
If I remember right, 1995 was also the year that Rush Limbaugh stated that all drug addicts should go to jail. Not the same thing, but the timing is eerie.

5. Dean's waffling will kick him in the ass
He is going to brutalized, and he isn't ready for it. He will NOT be able to talk his way out of all the flip-flops and lies.

7. That's my feeling as well....there just a few key "issues" they have to
Edited on Sat Dec-13-03 08:48 PM by Gloria
pounce on and repeat and they will rerun the "Gore is a liar" theme.
It worked before and will work again, because the media will suddenly forget to report things and you know the rest.

Let's see: some lack of clarity on the Iraq thing; the draft; NAFTA; sealed records; etc. etc. But those will do just fine. Keep it simple stupid.

Now,I'm not a Dean supporter, but I can see the difference between dodging the draft and having a condition that the military would reject someone on but which wouldn't affect other activities. But most Americans won't wait around for the details or can easily be beaten into submission with the black and white of the issue. Heck, I would bet Rove could even resurrect the carrier stunt, because they will be calling Dean a "draft dodger who skiied while Americans died." They'll Gore him and Horton him, I will bet.

Why is someone at DU making recommendations about what the GOP should be noting?

11. It's a joke...because the we all know the GOP is already planning
their attack. And because ABC is doing the job for them in their presentation....without much effort. All that the media has to do is report on the flip flops and gaffes, and the GOP will be echoing right behind them...

The reality is, of course, the GOP doesn't "have to take notes." They know what to do already

14. It is all about image - who can paint the other fellow as a liar
Right now we are up against "the president's a decent guy I can trust and will not mind on the living rm TV for another 4 years"

Indeed that is the only thing going for him - all else is background noise.

We need to equate Bush's face with the face of the "Liar" - not just because it is true - but today the election is about what image do you want to see coming out from the TV for the next 4 years. Who are you comfortable with. And the liar with no credibility tag must be stuck on Bush.

The media has to exposed as the liars they are - otherwise they will lie and spin for Bush and will deliberately lie and spin against any Democratic candidate. And getting folks killed based on a lie when UN intrusive inspections was what the world in the UN wanted for Iraq and, it turns out, was all that was needed - will be turned by our media into a public opinion that Bush is a great moral leader. (If they knew their Bible, they would know that he stands in direct opposition to everything Jesus stood for - but the media knows knothing about the Bible - or at least forgets it on the way to pick up the paycheck provided by Owners from the right or worried about advertisers on the right).

If we are going to defeat Bush, it will be in the personal, moral image.

Folks like the Democratic Party fellow because they are more morally fit than Bush. We will have to expose his lies, the scandals, his arrogance for what they really are - and point out that Bush is the morally and spiritually bankrupt person who is incompetent as President, and much more important, has no real plan for the future that will solve the monster problem of the deficit destoying our children's future, our safety - he choses the wrong country - Iraq - to chase terror, beyonf cutting benefits, turning government services over to private industry friends so as to make them more costly via adding a profit layer, and giving tax cuts to the rich. On the other hand We Democrats have a plan that was proven to work from 1993 to 2000 and we want to re-install it - together with the protections that prevented 911 from happening on Clinton's watch.

But also Howard or whoever wins the nomination needs to start ending speeches with "and God Bless these United States" - I know Howard and Kerry, etc. all feel their faith strongly - but the New England "faith is a private matter you do not push at anyone" just does not sell in the rest of the country.

And bravado - We are the toughest and I will use our might to stop anyone from harming us - needs to enter Howard's, Kerry's, etc. speeches. We say smirk is an ass - but many, many want to feel comfortable that the guy on the TV is "tough".

Howard, Kerry, etc. needs only these two changes - added to the economic wealth comes from a budget balanced by those that get the most paying the most - meaning we raise taxes on the rich back to Clinton levels - and I see a 52% Howard, Kerry, etc. win in Nov.!

17. The State Dept. issued an alert before Sept 11, 2001
The government knew something might happen, but didn't know what, when, or where.

Howard Dean did nothing wrong in implying that perhaps Bush doesn't want to release memos from before September 11 because of a non-specific warning in them.

20. Let the GOP take notes then
Dean has some great defense plan. He, and his team, having something on Bush that will make Rove wet his pants. I bet Rove even knows it. However first Dean as to win and if he doesn't I hope he gives that defense to our candiate.
