With some of my Republican friends. It's a play about a soldier in WWII finding faith in God just in time to be killed. It had an updated ending to show current soldiers coming home on leave.
What I found disturbing (and I'm not sure if I've gone off the deep end or not) was:
1. The church lobby was all decked out in military gear and a giant American flag. Thus, war, God, and America were all neatly tied together.
2. The brushing aside of the question of killing in war and its moral standing and the fact that this was all going on in a church (Isn't there a commandment?).
3. The fake gunplay/war movie footage in a church. The last time I saw religion and the military combined I think they called it "The Taliban"
4. The Repukes who associate with my friends, at an after-play gathering, starting making fun of vegetarians. I had to leave at that point because it was all I could do not to leave during the play.
I'm a left-wing Christian who believes Jesus was a liberal and who thinks taking care of the poor (vs. creating and using them) is an example of True Christianity.
I feel slightly annoyed rather than uplifted by a heartworming tale of heroes and their faith. Is it heroic to die guarding an oil pipeline for Halliburton? I have a real problem with the leaders who put people in such a position.
